Having hearts to give out makes me feel like a benevolent, yet capricious, deity.

I love the DU "hearts" thing! I've been a DUer since 2001 - can't remember exactly when I registered, I had lurked for some time before then, but I signed up officially some time in 2001 and I was the 6,679th person to do so.

Anyway, ever the since the DU Valentine hearts thing got going - can't remember which year it was - I have always thrown as much money into the pot as I could manage at the time, so I would have a good supply of hearts to give out.

The first thing I do is look for those DUers with whom I've established a friendship over the years, as well as those whose posts I have always appreciated - even if they're totally unaware that I'm a secret admirer.

After that is the really fun part - I read through thread after thread and look for folks who don't have any hearts and give them one. Not everyone, just those who have posted something that has caught my eye because they seem to be on a compatible wavelength - that's the "capricious" part. And because these days I lurk much more than I post, there's absolutely no way they could ever, ever guess who gave them a heart.

Yes, this is a vanity thread. But I've been having so much fun, I just felt like saying something.

My love to all DUers both known and unknown for keeping this wonderful place alive.

I'm not big on arguing about stuff, it's just too tiresome. I like to stay on top of what's going on - but I rarely feel like chiming in.

I prefer to digest the news quietly and keep my thoughts to myself. There's not much I'd have to say that hasn't been said by someone else already.

And some things I might like to say would probably be too offensive for many here, and I'd rather avoid the hassle.

I'm just feeling all sentimental tonight... You're one of the "old friends" who's been one of the constants in all my years on DU - whether you knew I was paying attention to you or not.

I'll just say thanks to you all you have personally contributed, and thanks to those who gave me a heart and a smile.
