(6,640 posts)what if God created science? what if God made sure everything had rules that we can find out by experimentation and study so that we may create great things ourselves?? I say something like that when I discuss reincarnation. Most believers will not allow any belief because of God and the Bible doesn't mention it. But I say 'what if God created reincarnation??' What if God created science so that we can create a small pox vaccine, a polio vaccine? And what if when God created man he did so through stages which we now call evolution? What if God created evolution to give us hints of something he wants us to know?? Would you really have us ignore the clues God has left us??

(5 posts)There are too many on both the left and the right who believe science and God are incompatible when in fact God could have been the author of all scientific laws.

(9,760 posts)"Would you really have us ignore the clues God has left us??" Since there is no evidence that your God even exists, much less that "he" left clues, that would be a silly thing for scientists to consider.
And, if there were a god who really wanted us to know certain things, why wouldn't he just come out and tell us. This hint shit is really lame.
Don't answer, I'm sure you have some circular, self-perpetuating god-reasoning answer for every question and I will reject all of them.

(51,907 posts)Science is about studying the operating system of the universe.
If some deity wrote the rules, that leads to the conclusion that the operating system of the universe is what it is.
If there is no author, that also leads to the conclusion that the operating system of the universe is what it is.
Why pick unnecessary fights, given such widespread scientific illiteracy. How science works does not depend on either the existence or the non-existence of a deity.

(6,640 posts)God is supposedly a parent, parents usually like kids to learn things for themselves not have everything spoon fed to them. You are also presuming legible communication between god and human.
also I am an atheist but if I were a believer why would I put limits on god?? God exists but he cannot comprehend the passing of time or the development of the human he created?? sounds like believing in a stupid god to me!!!!

(9,760 posts)As for the things people who make up things make up--yeah, there is no limit. Which is part of why it's meaningless. One can just make up anything, and often, as I said, religious people make up circular, self-perpetuating nonsense and call it reason, which I personally reject, as should any reasonable person, especially a scientist.

(12,799 posts)If God created science so that we could create vaccines against small pox and polio, why didn't he just not invent the diseases in the first place? It's not an argument I'd care for, and I don't think scientists should get into the religion business.

The Theory of Evolution is a theory, but guess what? When scientists use the word theory, it has a different meaning to normal everyday use.1 That's right, it all comes down to the multiple meanings of the word theory. If you said to a scientist that you didn't believe in evolution because it was "just a theory", they'd probably be a bit puzzled.
In everyday use, theory means a guess or a hunch, something that maybe needs proof. In science, a theory is not a guess, not a hunch. It's a well-substantiated, well-supported, well-documented explanation for our observations.2 It ties together all the facts about something, providing an explanation that fits all the observations and can be used to make predictions. In science, theory is the ultimate goal, the explanation. It's as close to proven as anything in science can be.
Some people think that in science, you have a theory, and once it's proven, it becomes a law. That's not how it works. In science, we collect facts, or observations, we use laws to describe them, and a theory to explain them. You don't promote a theory to a law by proving it. A theory never becomes a law.

(36,457 posts)Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light‐years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual. So are our emotions in the presence of great art or music or literature, or acts of exemplary selfless courage such as those of Mohandas Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr. The notion that science and spirituality are somehow mutually exclusive does a disservice to both.
