Texas State Sen. Wendy Davis (D) supports same-sex marriage and wants the state's attorney general and her likely opponent in the upcoming gubernatorial race, Greg Abbott (R), to stop defending the law.
"It's my strong belief that when people love each other and are desirous of creating a committed relationship with each other that they should be allowed to marry, regardless of their sexual orientation," Davis said to the San Antonio Express-News editorial board on Thursday, adding that she is pleased that the state's ban on same-sex marriage is being challenged in federal court.
"Obviously our AG has the capacity to do the same if he chooses to do so," Davis said. When the editorial board followed up by asking if she would ask him to stop defending the law Davis said she would, according to the Express-News.
A Texas federal judge is expected to rule on the state's same-sex marriage marriage ban, enacted in 2005.
