does anyone know if Al Gore is STILL fat?

Uri Friedman passes alongs the above graphic from a report (pdf) on global warming and Sochi:

By mid-century, according to pessimistic projections, only 10 of these cities will be climatically suitable to host the Games. By the end of the century, the field will be winnowed down to just Albertville, Calgary, Cortina d’Ampezzo, St. Moritz, Salt Lake City, and Sapporo.

Rick Mystrom is always pushing that idea up here in Anchorage. Frankly, I don't think it would work because our climate isn't all that stable either. You know, they're thinking of restarting the Iditarod in Fairbanks because the trail conditions are so bad down here.

I think it's a good idea to move the Iditarod up farther north, didn't we not have enough snow in town one year?

I think this strangeness of climate will just get worse. There might come a time when there will be no choice but to move it somewhere in our state. Maybe Fairbanks can host in 2040ish.

whether they're going to restart in Willow or Fairbanks. We could get a little snow between now and then (we got about 1/2 inch last night and are expecting more over the weekend) so hopefully everything will go off as planned. I think they did restart in Fairbanks a few years ago for lack of snow...I can't remember what year that was. The plan is still to do the ceremonial start in Anchorage on Saturday because they can always truck in snow for Fourth Avenue. Then if they have to go up to Fairbanks, they'll restart on Monday rather than the usual Sunday.

We've been going out to Nome for the finish the last few years and will again this year, but this will probably be the last time for a while since we want to do some other trips in state next year. We always spend so much money out in Nome between the hotel and all the meals, which are ridiculously expensive.

at a private fundraiser for Al Franken. The guy looked fantastic, better than most of the men his age -- the camera really did add 10 pounds in his case. He also had the most amazing skin -- very soft, very clear -- it was all I could do to not stroke his cheek.

And you chart? It stinks, and O is not really helping matters these days.

The sports change.

So, it's probably about time to start working on "downhill running" and "pairs puddle dancing".

They won't get enough snow by then, if trends continue. And Squaw wouldn't have worked this year without massive amounts of artificial snow.
