Why is Cruz destroying the Republican party?

My take is that he is governed by the hard dominionist view that he is specially chosen by God to Christianize America. Hard dominionism believes that America is or should be not only a nation of Christian values, but that certain people are chosen to take leadership positions in all segments of society to bring about a blessed state that enforces Christian beliefs.

Thus, with his sense of god-given purpose, he knows that whatever he does is the will of God and will lead to the establishment of a theocracy in America.

So he need not worry about compromise or working with others.

There's just something not right about a guy who tried to crash the global economy being married to a woman at the top of the most powerful firm on Wall Street. It's just strange that his wife keeps such a low profile despite her position and the MSM for the most part seems uninterested in her.

inexorable creep of far-right religious in my area, moving into social service organizations and the like) that there's some kind of agreement between the monied & the religious to move the country toward right-wing economics and right-wing religion. And to push religious as social service providers.

George W. as a born-again Christian is another data point, as are the policies he put in place to fund religious as social service providers. Obama opening up Head Start type programs to religious providers is another.

I believe it was Bush that made it possible for charter schools to be run by religious organizations as well.

There was a famous woman writer who wrote a book about a future fundie America some years back -- can't remember the name of the book but it is seeming more plausible all the time.

It was an undercurrent during the Bush years, but it's more out in the open now.

IIRC the book you mentioned is "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood.

Given that a large portion of (R) primary voters are nuts, Cruz is attempting a takeover from within. He also sees himself as the leader of the new Republican Party. He wants moderate Republicans (or those moderate from his point of view) to lose primary challenges to Teabaggers.

I think he really just wants to have power.

Fortunately, I don't think he's going to have as much luck with that as he thinks.
