Look at what the decline of unions has meant for American workers. Stagnant pay, loss of benefits and jobs that pay crap. And they deserve. You do not have any rights because you do not demand any. So when you have been basically fucked economically it is your fault.

(45,851 posts)Every single union member I know is further right politically than I am, some of them much further right. My union member son in law for instance proudly told me he "voted for anyone with an R next to their name". I also have other family members who are public employee union members and loathe anything remotely liberal.

(10,602 posts)Only a complete idiot wold have such a stance. And I have heard the same thing. Sad that the racist meme the GOP uses works so well. Ultimately they are responding the to GOP meme that liberals and Dems give all YOUR money to "N's", "S's" and the lazy. This racial subliminal meme is in ALL GOP communication. The open attacks on the poor and disabled are essentially racial attacks. The GOP implies that people using government money are minorities and scammers.

I've been a union member, and more than once honored picket lines. I've not worked because of union strikes two different times in my life, and I can tell you that even after nearly fifty years, I remember who crossed the picket lines and who didn't.

(9,457 posts)in line with all it's other plants which are union. VW is a rare example of someone who isn't non-union because they want to hurt workers over pay. That's why they didn't mind or wanted the union. Their pay and benefits could possibly be better, but I think all the other unions involved with VW want to keep the wages and benefits in Chattanooga in line with theirs so there isn't a huge financial incentive to move more work there. That's just my thought. It's like a non-union plant that's surrounded by union plants, they keep their pay just under what the union plants pay because they know they'll go union if they don't.

(402 posts)One day American workers will have no choice but to fight for their own best interest, wealthy investors are never sated and will always demand more labor productivity and lower labor cost. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to see this trend is bad for middle class workers and will result in the total collapse of middle class labor then middle class business then the American economy.
The people that caused it all don't care they will be retired or dead, they got theirs.
Its Unions or a Third World nation, the only thing that can stop the wealthy from taking everything is us.

(187 posts)America. VW Management was hoping that by including the workers in the managerial decisions they could produce a better product.
I guess VW underestimated the stupidity of the workers in certain regions of the country.
All the German Auto Manufactures Management in America think it is insane workers will not unionize and do not understand it.
Unless VW starts to build a better product in TN they will pull the plug on the plant as soon as the tax payer provided tax breaks to VW expire.
