'Stand with Sam' human wall draws large crowd before Tennessee-Missouri basketball game

The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., sent 14 members to Columbia on Saturday to picket Michael Sam, the former Missouri defensive end who came out to the world Sunday.

The "Stand with Sam" human wall, organized through Facebook and other grassroots means, carved a line down the sidewalk on Stadium Blvd., starting at the church's picket on the corner of Stadium and Providence Rd. and reaching nearly a half-mile at its height.

Former Tigers offensive lineman Max Copeland was one of the people making up the human wall, sporting his characteristic headband and gallon jug of water.

He had some thoughts on the occasion:

“This is one of those things where it’s a way to stand up for our brother while still communicating peace, love and acceptance. No one gets to attack our family member but, at the same time, the spirit of this whole week has been accepting others and loving others, whatever that means. It’s a cool way for everyone to show that love for our family member.”
