By Michael Collins, on February 15th, 2014
The Syrian Arab Army may be on the verge of another set of victories that go far beyond those gained in the summer of 2013 when the Syrian army and Hezbollah took the rebel held city of Qusayr. The hotly contested battles rage in the major city of Aleppo and the much smaller mountain city of Yabrud. Major gains in either locale would be significant. Victories in both would raise questions about the various rebel factions and their ability to continue contesting for control of the country.

(9,461 posts)3. I disagree. The US is providing food and pay for the moderate fighters. The rebel factions have
merged into two groups. The Southern Front in the south (moderate, mostly secular) and the Al-Qaeda types up north. Saudi Arabia is going to be providing weapons to the fighters in the South. some of the weapons being purchased are Russian made so Putin may be ready to drop the condition that Assad stay in power.
Obama is supposed to ask Congress for certain weapons for the Southern contingent next week. Now that the Southern Front has formed and they have a leader who has met with Jordan, US, Saudi Arabia and others who feel comfortable with his ability to keep weapons out of the hands of the extremists up north support will be headed their way.
