IHOP FIRES 2 WAITRESSES AFTER CUSTOMER THROWS A GLASS OF MILK CAUSING FACE INJURIESA waitress at an Evansville, IN IHOP was injured by a customer throwing a glass of milk in her face. Apparently the custy and server were acuaintances with ongoing problems, so you can imagine management was not thrilled. On the IHOP Facebook page the server, Jasmine Ewards, posted this photo and is saying the manager fired her and someone standing up for her. Customers also supported her actions in handling the attack. The news report below doesn't mention the double firing and there has not been any mention of the attack in mainstream media (it happened on February 3rd). Is this just another day at IHOP? Is it okay to be attacked at your job???? -- even if you know the person? Do you think it was just that she and someone standing up for her got fired after the attack? Why not let a restraining order take care of the violent custy?

From Courier Press:
EVANSVILLE An IHOP worker went to the hospital Sunday after a customer threw a glass of milk at her, according to an Evansville Police Department report.
That customer, 20-year-old Jazmine Bryson, was arrested and accused of battery causing serious bodily injury, a class C felony. The glass shattered when it struck the worker.
According to the police department affidavit, the 19-year-old victim, identified as Jasmine Edwards, told investigators that she and Bryson are acquaintances and that the pair have had ongoing problems. Edwards told police that Bryson came into the restaurant with the workers cousin on Sunday, and that Edwards went to talk to him.

It said they were "having problems".
I'd probably not be enthused about employing a working that would put herself in a position that a reasonable person might expect to cause an issue in the restaurant.
Too few details, but I'd assume there is more to this story which we aren't getting.
What happened between the perp entering the IHOP and a glass getting thrown in the victims face?

(29,067 posts)I have, and while some of what you say sounds reasonable, a waiter or waitress usually has NO power over who
he or she has to wait on.
Wait staff are assigned a group of tables, called a "station" and they must wait on those people, whether
they know and like them or not.
I've had people I knew and disliked sit at my station, and the best you can do is ask a co-worker
to "pick up" a table as a favor to you. That co-worker may or may not agree.
I only mention this because unless the waitress DELIBERATELY went over to that table to start trouble,
the ensuing conflict may not have been her fault.

(2,337 posts)I'm aware that switching is sometime impossible. Things would have to be really fucked up for a switch to not happen, but it conceivably could.
The article seems to indicate that she went over to them to talk. I didn't see anything about her being their server. The way it is written, it leads me to believe that she sought them out.

(29,067 posts)Maybe she did "seek them out", but she claims the manager claimed that "her people", whatever that means,
didn't "know how to behave" or something close to that, so the question remains if she is getting canned for
the behavior of "her people" rather than herself.

(8,303 posts)The waitress went to talk to her cousin (normally one would at least say hello), the thrower (not her cousin) asked her to leave and the waitress was in fact leaving when the thrower pitched the glass of milk.
It doesn't sound like the waitress' fault.
I've gotta guess that the milk-thrower hasn't been assaulting the waitress every time they meet, because the milk thrower would be sitting in jail rather than in the restaurant. Nothing about the waitress' behavior seems outlandish.
I have never in my life seen a grown person throw a dish. I don't think anybody would expect this!!!
Employees should only be fired for what they do, not for what someone else does to them in the workplace.

(6,828 posts)In the original story, the person who threw the glass of milk is claiming that the waitress started the fight.
Not that I am surprised that she would say that, facing a Class C felony.
But I can also understand why the manager fired the waitress (probably on the spot). If you see your worker fighting with a customer, that is usually grounds for immediate dismissal.
But if it was really the girl facing the charges fault, Jasmine Edwards should be re-hired.

However the first poster on this thread was more concerned that the header was in caps!
Their compassion underwhelms me.
Thanks fresh.
