Obama Apologizes to Art Historian

So, an art historian wrote Obama re his recent remarks on getting technical training and it being as good as if not better than majoring in, say, art history, and Obama penned an apology:

Ann —

Let me apologize for my off-the-cuff remarks. I was making a point about the jobs market, not the value of art history. As it so happens, art history was one of my favorite subjects in high school, and it has helped me take in a great deal of joy in my life that I might otherwise have missed.

Everyone's cool now, it seems.

I don't believe there is anyone with real class in the Republican Party PERIOD. They are crass, vulgar, mean, and suffer from arrested development.

and don't see anything wrong with the President's original remarks. The fact is technical training is "as good or better" for some people. It depends where your interests and abilities lie. I wouldn't have taken offense, but of course I'm a public school teacher and we have very thick skins.

remember a time where everything the POTUS does or says is ripped apart, just looking for some slight to one group or another. Mr. "Art Historian" should get over it.

to the State Dinner for President Hollande the other week, and sat her at the head table next to him. She's director and chief curator at the Studio Museum of Harlem.

Everyone I know was bewildered and slightly miffed at his statement (there are good, if not high-paying jobs, for art historians in both academia and the museum world). I know Obama likes art, because (1) his first date with Michelle was apparently an afternoon at the Art Institute of Chicago; (2) on one of his first trips abroad as President, he took his family to the Pompidou Center to look at the art (the pictures were almost shocking for an American president); and (3) when they moved into the White House, the Obamas had a number of very good paintings by contemporary artists placed in the residence.

It was a stupid thing to say. I think it was the promotion of math/science he has been trying to promote so much: but there's no need to mock art history!!
