Theres been a lot of press about the stray dogs around the Sochi Olympic Games and all of the people who are trying to adopt them.
But American luge athlete Kate Hansen found one stray she will not be taking home.
Yes, that looks like a wolf roaming the halls of the dorms where the Olympic athletes stay. Of course it could just be another stray dog that looks like a wolf. Either way, Hansen should probably just shut her door.

Fuck these Olympics.

(25,699 posts)Once you've seen a few wolves, it becomes VERY hard to mistake any breed of dog for them.
A husky, for instance, has the usual "dog" traits - mostly in the face, reflecting the puppy neoteny all dogs have. A thicker muzzle, a defined "stop" where muzzle meets brow, a round face, and thicker ears. They're also quite a bit smaller than wolves. Their coats are also very different - huskies are bicolored, and their fur is thick and very close, usually without additional guardhairs. Their tails also have a perpetual curl to them, the tightness of which can vary by line, but is always present. They also move differently, since they're basically "designed" to plow straight ahead, whereas a wolf prowls and sweeps. A feral animal also prowls, but the differnet body plans just makes it look... differnet, it's hard to explain.
This animal is, after several re-watches, certainly a wolfdog, favoring thewolf ancestry.
One, it's big. Unless Russia puts their doorknobs significantly lower on the door than Americans, this animal's hips are nearly three feet above the ground.
Two, the pelage; this animal has nearly perfect coloring one would expect of either wolf subspecies in the Sochi area. Huskies do not have color like that. Also it clearly has a distinct "mane" or ruff, of varicolored guard hairs. Again very unlike a husky, or just aout any oter dog.
Three, the face os very wolflike, with a slender muzzle, tall ears, and lacking a clearly-defined muzzle stop. However this also indicates it's not fully wolf - it does have a deeper stop than a wolf would, but still far shallower than a dog. Also the facial coloration - white fur on the brow isn't very common for wolves. Not impossible, just very uncommon.
The critter's movements are also more wolf than dog - an argument could be made of this just being feral behavior, of course, so take it with a grain of salt.
The tail has a very slight curve to the very tip. More than a wolf, far less than a husky-type dog. The tail's also pretty bedraggled, o this nimal is probably in a pack of other canines, and likely not the tall dog on the totem pole (lots of back-biting for this guy)
Wolfdog. Still might have been someone's pet once upon time. Russians aren't any brighter than Americans on that score and have more wolves to work with.

(2,273 posts)Wolves don't wonder around where people are and it's way to small to be a wolf. Stuff like this only encourages people to run out and hunt wolves because they are blood thirsty animals just looking to kill our Olympians.
Feet too small, muzzle kind of pointy and a clear line of color change on the muzzle like a husky, body too bulky, legs too short, bit of a bushy tail... and they eyes would be yellow or gold if it was a wolf.
And I know huskies and hybrids that have that coloring... and I live where the wolves are, see them quite often... that is not a wolf (hybrid, maybe) but NOT A WOLF.
Like dilby says, this sort of alarmist crap makes idiots think they have to go kill wolves because someone thought they saw one and it scared them. You know, like black teens living and breathing air scares stupid white folks.

Olympian's 'wolf' video turns out to be Kimmel hoax
The internet was on fire Thursday morning when Olympian Kate Hansen tweeted a link to a YouTube video with what appeared to be a wolf or large dog roaming what she claimed was her hall at the Olympic Village in Sochi.
But apparently this was an orchestrated hoax by late-night TV host Kimmel. According to the Orlando Sentinel and Kansas City Star, Sandy Caligiore, a publicist for the United States Luge Association, confirmed to Inside Edition that the video was a hoax. Caligiore said Hansen will Skype with Kimmel for the show that airs Thursday night.
