Is Arizona really such a hateful, bigoted, racist and homophobic state? My apologies to DU'ers, but it's not a fucken place I would ever want to be and many people I know have said the same. Maybe they want to bring back discrimination against blacks too? Damn I hate fucked religion, the great divider of mankind IMO!

Under the bill, a business owner would have a defense against a discrimination lawsuit, provided a decision to deny service was motivated by a "sincerely held" religious belief and that giving such service would have substantially burdened the exercise of their religious beliefs.
"The Arizona legislature sent a clear message today: In our state everyone is free to live and work according to their faith," said Cathi Herrod, president of the conservative Center for Arizona Policy, which helped write the bill.
The bill passed the Republican-controlled state House of Representatives 33-27 on Thursday, a day after it won similar approval in the state Senate. It will go to Republican Governor Jan Brewer, who has not indicated whether she will sign it.
The American Civil Liberties Union branded the legislation as "unnecessary and discriminatory," saying it had nothing to do with God or faith.

Brewer should not sign this bill--I believe the vote was 17-14--down party lines. Disgusting!

(67,032 posts)Scottsdale, for example, to meet with major vendors. Today, I doubt Scottsdale would even be on my list. I would not subject my employees to such a hostile environment. And these were multi-million deals.
Also, this does not represent my religion, so, they need to quantify their faith as "Church of Hatred." They do not speak for all of religious people, so, they need to quit using the term religions as a catch-all for their desired license to practice hatred and persecution. Furthermore, they need to have placards on all of their businesses and in advertising stating they practice discrimination and list therein what they discriminate against.

(25,816 posts)I'll bet businesses that displayed such a placard would lose a lot more than just gay customers.
RKP5637
(67,032 posts)areas. Replace gay with whatever one desires and the methodology is the same. Many people recognize this. Even negotiations could be difficult IMO for companies that embrace discrimination, for me, it indicates a grave lack of maturity and really not places conducive to working a fair deal. I would remove them from my vendor list immediately.

(39,961 posts)cheap tricks like playing on bigotry and discrimination give a damn about business, because ultimately, all they care about is staying in the business of being a politician. If their constituents think they give one shit about them, they are deluded. Sadly, those who become collateral damage of this hatred and bigotry know this. It's the ones that think it couldn't happen to them that need to wake up.

(15,214 posts)I'm a flaming heterosexual. I would never patronize any establishment that was doing this or any other type of discrimination that I was aware of. And I'd like them to put their money where their mouths are and put up a sign so I'll know not to go there!
If they want to hate, then let them be proud enough of their hate to advertise it.
RKP5637
(67,032 posts)hatred is not bounded by just LGBT. To me, it indicates a major character flaw ... something, someone, some establishment to be avoided. I, like you, want them to be easily identified, I don't want to have to ask or guess.

(19,964 posts)Arizona, Kansas, Idaho, among others. Like I posted a couple of weeks ago, LGBT folks need to be cautious when making travel plans because the laws protecting them can vary widely from state to state. The last thing you need is to be traveling through a state, have a medical emergency and discover you can't find a doctor who will treat you. Or a hotel that will offer you a room, or a restaurant that will serve you a meal. I'm a big proponent of supporting those states who support US, so consider these factors when making your travel plans. If you MUST travel to these states for family or business, make sure you have all your paperwork in order and take copies with you.
As for those LGBTs already living in those states, lawyer up. You'll need it.

(67,032 posts)snacks so I don't have to eat or stay over in them. I just view some states as hostile territories, because that hatred spills over into many areas, not just homophobia.
Often when they have hatred in one area, it encompasses several. There are also some states IMO people should just leave if possible, because they are filled with hostilities in so many areas. I've met quite a few people that have moved from some states because of their collective hatefulness and bigotry about this one or that one, etc.
I see the US as going back to territories in some areas as people leave and are replaced by increasing pockets of hatred.

(285 posts)Attempting to codify prejudice, racism, and discrimination at the State level *shouldn't * survive a Federal or SCOTUS challenge. That said we have prejudiced racist discriminating goons at every level of the judiciary

(67,032 posts)the face of everything this country was founded on. It is simply outright discrimination and persecution being directed at many, passed into law. I'm surprised there isn't more of an uproar by the masses.
The difficulty is, as I see it, people think it only effects them over there, or those, but what they don't get is they will be next. More and more each day instead of being the United States we are becoming the Divided States.

(67,032 posts)eventual downfall over and over again in history. In many ways is the SOS, just different times. I was so naive so long, I had no idea, it was when Bush was elected I started to realize the enormous ignorance and hatefulness festering in the US. And some of my then friends voting for him twice they thought he was so wonderful. Yuck!

(39,961 posts)a lot of unrest in the US because of many factors - declining wages, inflation that isn't acknowledged, blatant corporate misdeeds and plain evil being swept under the rug, along with the general idea that things aren't getting better.
That's a recipe for people to turn on each other. You don't strike at the Wall Street swindlers that cost you your home, your pension or your 401K, you strike at your neighbor. If you are ignorant, of course. It's a coordinated and time-tested way to keep the top at the top despite the harm that they cause.

(19,964 posts)We've seen this principle in action in state after state. That's why I keep repeating and I'll keep repeating, the fight for LGBT rights is one front in a much larger battle. The very same forces taking aim at LGBTs are the same ones seeking to deny women reproductive rights. Too often, they are the same people seeking to destroy labor unions, undermine voting rights, increase corporate power, et al. You just can't compartmentalize these issues and win the war. Our enemies know this but they use it to their benefit -- divide and conquer.
RKP5637
(67,032 posts)same, the evilness of pure hatred. It is endemic to this personality profile. They have a Hate Fetish! As you say, people need to see it all as one in the same, pure hatred for hates sake. A good example are the signs the Phelps' Family display.
theHandpuppet
(19,964 posts)We all have to be in this fight together because it's the SAME DAMN WAR. Folks can't just say I'm going to fight poverty at the expense of women's rights, or LGBT rights, or racist Jim Crow laws. Or I'm going to fight for LGBT rights as a Log Cabin Republican, for instance. That's bullshit. Because when you do that, they win.

(4,056 posts)...but funny how it's a double-standard: I'm a vegetarian, and I check in moose hunters at the airline where I work. If I were to refuse to tag their guns because it violated my passionate beliefs re animal life being equal to human, guess what I'd get???
A big fat pink slip.
And so I should: a business is a business, and personal beliefs need to be left the fuck out of it. If you're working at a place that offends your sensibilities--or you own a business that requires you to interact with people whom you disagree with--then suck it up or consider another line of work.
The fact that the system is coddling these idiots is beyond stupid.

(11,366 posts)Is this another ALEC specialty?
If so, why?
Usually, we see these sorts of tandem bills winding their way through Republican-controlled states as a result of an ALEC push. Rarely do we see these things independent of one another.
So, if ALEC is pushing it, why? ALEC is pro-business. Refusing to serve ANYONE would cut into profits.
haele
(12,581 posts)One that includes rigid social controls. Controls such as simplification in law and thought; legislated Manichean religious prominence, restricted educational opportunities, draconian "prove your innocence" judiciary (and policing), indentured servitude, debt slavery, and a permanent underclass, with a few moneyed "gentry" running the country in measurable absolutes and the bottom line.
To ALEC, everything and everyone must be able to be identified with a debt to capital ratio price tag, or they have no value.
So, "Grandma and Grandpa" do not deserve to live if they can't pull their own weight and pay for their own care.
You lose your job and don't have enough savings or investments to carry you through to the next job available - tough. You obviously either made poor choices or had no value to begin with. You're better off dead.
Single parent struggling through poverty? Your fault. You shouldn't have had kids unless you had half-a-million or more in personal savings to cover whatever it was that made you a single parent. Or you were a bad husband or wife and shouldn't have gotten the kids when you divorced or your spouse up and left you. Or you shouldn't have been such a slut. Better off leaving your kids to the state and going off into some hellish corner and either get your life back together or pass on.
Children only have as much value as their future earning potential or economic profile. A kid has an emotional or learning problem? Disabled? Parents don't have the money to care for "it" or fix the problem? Tough. Throw the kid away or sell "it" as a damaged commodity, 'cause in ALEC-world, it's just a waste of time and money trying to raise "it" into a "productive" adulthood.
That's what ALEC is about. Putting a price-tag on everything.
ALEC would also prefer that independent thinkers, creative people, and other potential human risks to their power be neutralized, either economically, politically, or straight out removed from society as soon as they begin to cause "trouble" or step out of line.
After all, the best way to preserve the status quo is to quickly quash any deviation from the approved and accepted "norm". After all, we all know that in the good old days, everybody was happy and knew their place - and things were all butterflies and rainbows in monochrome.

It certainly serves as some commentary, example, on religion. We embrace hatred, persecution and separatism. That, should certainly unite the country. What asses. These, are not religious people.
