in your opinion, what countries pose the biggest threat to world peace?
I'll start by saying I think the number one most dangerous country is North Korea.
but, I'm not as informed as many on the goings on around the globe, do think NK, or someplace else?

(402 posts)We go to war for our best interest any chance we get, its easy to be bias about the US when you are born here but if you take an unbiased look we are the true war mongers and biggest threat to peace in the world. Most of the negative stuff that is said about other nations in our media and from our government is the same shit we do ourselves, we are a very hypocritical nation.
We kill innocent foreign civilians by the tens of thousands, we kill our own civilians by the thousands, we have the most prisoners in the world and we put them behind bars because they have drug addictions or are of a certain race or class, we spy on our own citizens, we don't investigate rape cases by the tens of thousands, we have slavery and those slave masters are protected because they are wealthy, other country's will be wiped off the map because we refuse to do anything about our oil addiction, we force other nations to submit to our trade policy's at the expense of their people, we let police beat and kill protesters, we let people starve even though we are the wealthiest nation on the planet, we kill people in other country's with drones most of the deaths have been innocent. it goes on and on this nation is just as sick as those we criticize.

North Korea is very dangerous. I happen to live about 26 km from the boarder. I have been up to the DMZ. Bill Clinton got it right when he called it "the scariest place on earth".
In addition to the nuclear weapons and missile tests, the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan and the bombing of Yeongpyung have both caused the death of South Koreans. The human rights violations of their own people has been well documented and I have heard first hand accounts from defectors.
While I have no doubt the US has made mistakes, anyone holding them up against North Korea and says we are worse is a fool.

(22,000 posts)and realize that we have it pretty well compared to North Koreans. We can still stand up for ourselves. In terms of danger, Uncle Kim with his nuclear weapons are pretty damn dangerous.
Scuba
(53,475 posts)... on the other hand has used depleted uranium weapons in Iraq and elsewhere.
Did N. Korea start the war in Iraq based on a bunch of lies? No? Well, what wars have they started since, say, 1950? What countries have they invaded?
You can call it 'bashing'. I call it telling the truth in an effort to make our country better.
davidpdx
(22,000 posts)I think you underestimate the damage North Korea could do.
In terms of bashing, you don't tell anything close to the truth given your brash ideological hatred of the US and the president. I've never heard anything out of your mouth positive about the president or the country.
I have no problem in saying we have done things that are wrong and they should never happen again or that we need to fix certain things. But when you are stepping on the SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECHHHHHHHHHHHHHH note 24/7 it only goes to prove what you are.
Violet_Crumble
(35,961 posts)North Korea just doesn't have the power and the resources to be a global threat, just a local one. The US on the other hand is the global hegemon, and has been unrestrained in what it does since the balancing superpower of the Soviet Union ceased to exist.
If the Republicans gain power in 2016, do you really think that the US wouldn't become a big threat, especially given what we saw Bushco do?
davidpdx
(22,000 posts)Then again, the two wars are not that far removed from where we will be. I think so much time had passed since the Vietnam era and so much apathy had built up prior to 2000-2001 that there were not enough people being vocal about the opposition to war.
Yes, we have a powerful military. No doubt about that. China doesn't yet, but give them about 5-10 years.
My point with North Korea is they are in a proximity to disrupt three big economies in the world: South Korea, Japan, and China. We pretty much know China would fall on the side of North Korea. Japan and South Korea are rather large trading partners with the US. It really only takes an attack against one of them to start a spark. The economic effect would be felt in the US as well as the fact we'd probably be drawn into a conflict. Theoretically it would take a single missile.

(4,015 posts)Not sure that there is a clear answer there. I think we are very likely to start the next world war, but that's a game that takes more than one to play. But mostly it's the waning empire that starts them.
I do not believe that North Korea poses any significant danger to other countries, while it surely is one of the most dangerous countries for its inhabitants. These people want to stay in power, and they'll lose what little they got as soon as the first shots are returned.

(187 posts)NK, no big deal, China will keep them in check because China does not want millions of North Korean refugees coming across the border.
Heck if things got bad enough in NK, China would do a regime change in NK just to keep the refugees out of China.

(1,036 posts)If the US just up and walked away from the DMZ, North Korea would not take action against South Korea because .... China?
LOL!
Yea, that's it.
North Korea is not Iraq, they have the third largest standing army in the world, and if you include inactive they have the largest fighting force on the planet in sheer numbers. Almost 40% of thier population is military. To create "regime change" would most likely take killing 50% of the population, over 10M people.
No big deal.
wocaonimabi
(187 posts)China will not let NK get close to war. NK does not fear the USA but they fear China. China likes to make money, war is expensive and creates uncertainty.
NK will eventually collapse just like all communist regimes the question is when and how.

(121 posts)having the military means to deliver it. Numerous countries can be considered localized threats, to the local population or to bordering populations but what is meant by threat and appearing on Americans radar is challenging America's world hegemony. In other words states that are under hegemony becoming political unstable, strategic or states that can challenge US hegemony.

(3,829 posts)it's obviously the US. We're the most powerful nation, and we have a large military that many politicians have granted themselves the right to use against anyone in the world that isn't the right kind of person. The history is there and it isn't good. The US treats its own citizens pretty well, though.
To be fair, maybe we should be asking who is the biggest threat in the world, pound for pound. That has to be Israel. They have started numerous aggressive wars. Israel receives more support from the most powerful and dangerous nation in the world (the US) than any other and its crazy supporters in the US lobby the US to start more wars. Israel treats almost half of the citizens under its control (Israel/Palestine is essentially one nation) as second class to subhuman citizens. If every nation on Earth behaved as Israel the world would be totally f#@*ed so much crap from such a tiny nation.
Other candidates are North Korea for how it treats its own citizens and Saudi Arabia for the religious garbage and radicalism it spreads throughout the world.

ALL three are messing around in multiple places in the world exerting pressure while promoting their own agenda.
Now if you would have asked 3 that are the most ..."evil" then it would be
North Korea, China, and the third would be a toss up between several.
But never forget Australia... they are the worst. Their accent has done more to destabilize people around the world than any other thing!

(16,184 posts)Though the leaderships of Russia, North Korea, Syria, and Israel aren't exactly working hard towards stability themselves.
As a preemptive defense against "you're just America bashing": this is an anti-imperialism point, not anti-US. When the British were in the same position, they were the greatest threat to world peace, and the USSR shared plenty of the blame during the Cold War for instability, and if the tables were somehow flipped that Russia or China were in our position now as a hyperpower with military bases in 200 countries, they would be too. Peace and imperialism can't coexist.

(34,105 posts)we go BEFORE the blink of an eye.
We will take down whoever we decide would be most beneficial to us to take down. War? Not always, but we disturb the peace of every country we decide to involve ourselves in.
We need to stop stirring up the world. We need to stop stirring up ourselves. We need to stop and realize we are MEMBERS of the planet, nobody ever asked us to run the thing alone.
I hate to say this having been raised on all the goodness of this country but it was crap, propaganda of the highest degree all the while selling us the "Better dead than red" BS that was so popular.
I love my country but I hate what it has done to the rest of the world and I am not terribly happy about what it is doing to itself these days either.
There are a lot of countries that are dangerous, this is true, however we are big and wealthy and we spend most of our wealth to stir up shit or bomb up shit elsewhere. How is that ever going to make things turn out well?
