BY JIA LYNN YANG
Usually during this time of year, the delicate Arabica coffee plants in the mountains of Brazil, where most of the world's coffee comes from, are maturing. White, fragrant flowers have appeared, followed by cherry-like fruit, each containing two seeds: Arabica coffee beans, the most popular in the world.
But last month, the worst drought in decades hit Brazil's coffee belt region, destroying crop yields and causing the price of coffee to shoot up by more than 50 percent so far this year. The drought is historic, with more than 140 cities in Brazil forced to ration water. The country's leading newspapers reported that some neighborhoods are receiving water only every three days.
For now, retail prices for coffee are stable. Roasters typically have enough supplies to cover themselves for a few months. But if the price of the Arabica (pronounced uh-RAB-ick-uh) beans continues to rise, consumers could start seeing the cost of their morning coffee creep up later this year, according to Jack Scoville, a futures market analyst specializing in grains and coffee, among other commodities.
You can see the dramatic rise in the price of coffee due for delivery in March below. On Wednesday, the price per pound reached the highest point in about 14 months at $1.72.

Between this, the drought in California and cattle stocks at low levels, gonna be an expensive summer for food and drink. Unless you are lucky enough to be able to grow your own.

(36,269 posts)...and currently have about 30 lbs from three Central American fincas on hand. The irony is that I generally pay in the neighborhood of $6 per pound for coffee that is ten times better than the drek the grocery store sells for more, even the local small batch roasts, because they mostly don't buy the small high quality lots those farms have on offer. The green beans have a LONG shelf life, and the freshly roasted coffee is not even the same substance most people pass off as coffee. SO espresso, too.
So Maxwell House and Folgers are gonna have a supply crunch. Starbucks too? Bwahahahahaha!

If you want to actually TASTE some of it, well, they have a bin in the back where you deposit your first-born child.

(27,553 posts)doubtful if green beans will rise very much (if at all). However, look for the consumer to take a bit in the a$$ as usual. They will use this as an excuse to raise prices.

(3,539 posts)It's bad enough that I just had to replace an old, no I don't remember how old it was, Black and Decker under the counter thing.
Now Coffee is going to get pricey.
Damn!
By the by. If you have one of those old B&D under the counter types. When if finally gives up the ghost it may not just leak.
Darned impressive display as it flung water and half brewed coffee all over the kitchen.

It now sits on a shelf in the garage and I fully intend to take a shot at fixing it.
When it gets warm enough to be worked on Outside!
