Watching Decorah Eagles

Still only one egg - I thought for sure that when I checked in this morning (it's nearly 11.00 a.m. Thursday in Sydney), we would have a second egg, but still only one. As I watch, it's Dad sitting on the nest, and Lord, it looks freezing cold, with the wind blowing like crazy.

The Raptor Resource people are a little worried about the sub-zero temperatures, the lowest they've ever been at egg-laying time. I do hope they all survive - one thing's for sure, those two devoted parents will do all they can to make sure their babies are safe and warm. Their parenting skills are excellent.

Anyone else watching with me?

I've only managed to catch the actual event once in about four or five years of watching.

I guess it's Mum on the nest now, having a bit of a rest.

They're not quite such a good parenting team as the Decorah eagles, but I think the mum at least is learning.

She always lays two eggs, but each year, one gets broken. Apparently the shells are fairly thin - something to do with the diet, I think - and every year one breaks. Last year she raised her baby to fledgling stage, but the year before, the eaglet was taken in the night by a fox. Both parents were away from the nest for too long, but mum seems to have learned from that, and she's much more diligent now. But I like to watch that nest too; it's interesting to see how her skills are improving.

The Decorah eagles are model parents, though - so careful, and they work so well as a team.
