It was a pretty good run and we should all be so lucky as to have a life such as hers.
She was born in rural White County, Indiana and lived on a farm until moving into town in the early 1970's. She had 3 daughters and one son, my dad, who was the youngest. They grew a variety of crops, raised cows, chickens, goats, pigs, also bred plow horses and beagles. Later diversified and owned a roofing company until Grandpa passed in the mid-70's. After that she traveled extensively including Russia, Italy, Germany, etc. Here eyes were clear and bright, she made sense during most conversations, and was always cheery and upbeat. She was a skilled seamstress, never drove a car and her life experiences made her quite a raconteur.
She would spend summers in Indiana and winters in Florida with her daughters. About a year and a half ago, she attended my brother's wedding in Chicago. She moved around from table to table chatting (despite the loud DJ) and hardly ever sat down. They say if it's too loud, you're too old; she had no problem with the volume and had quite a nice time.
She was mostly in very good health until a couple of months ago when hospitalized after a fall. Two weeks ago her doctor recommended hospice care, moved a hospital bed into her home and assigned two shifts of visiting nurses. She demanded the bed be removed, dismissed the nurses and the following morning awoke demanding a breakfast of potatoes with onions and a fried egg.
A pretty good run!

(35 posts)Sound like my mom. They don't make them like that any more.
I bet she could play Euchre and would only trump her partners ace when needed.
Don't morn her loss, but celebrate her life.
She would like that.

(5,997 posts)How they had to rotate horse teams on an hourly basis while plowing fields.
The billy goat that had an attitude and would chase my dad around the barnyard.
Running a farm and house without electricity, esp. during the cold Northern Indiana winters. Gotta keep a pitcher of water to prime the pump.
How the "hobos" had somehow mysteriously marked the house as a place where they could reliably get a handout meal when passing through.
The pet goat that went missing for nearly two weeks only to be found lodged behind a large stack of roofing supplies. After being rescued, drank water for 5-minutes straight and then pretended nothing had happened. This is the goat that was part pet and part lawnmower.
I could listen to these stories for hours...

(7,720 posts)after only being sick for two weeks. She would have been miserable in a nursing home. She too did not drive. After my grandfather died, she wanted to see her sisters back in the old country. She went into the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War using a false passport that identified her as a Canadian. She ditched her Inturist 'chaperone' in Kyiv and west to west Ukraine where westerners were not allowed. When she left, she smuggled ten quarts of moonshine vodka in her luggage and nobody bothered her. These old ladies sure had quite interesting lives.
I thought my grandmother had a good run, but your grandmother beat her by more than 20 years.
