(Lizzy Seeberg's alleged rapist) Former Notre Dame linebacker discusses sexual assault allegation

Former Notre Dame linebacker Prince Shembo acknowledged Saturday that he was the ND player at the center of a 2010 investigation involving sexual assault allegations made by a Saint Mary’s College student who later committed suicide.

The player’s name had never been made public. Shembo was in Indianapolis on Saturday where he is participating in the NFL Combine, which is being held at Lucas Oil Stadium.

In September 2010, Saint Mary’s College freshman Lizzy Seeberg committed suicide after accusing a Notre Dame football player of sexually assaulting her in an ND residence hall. Notre Dame found the player’s actions did not violate its sexual misconduct policy and the player was not charged.

“I’m innocent,” Shembo told ESPN.com. “I didn’t do anything. I’m, pretty much, I’m the one who ended it and pretty much told the girl that we should stop, that we shouldn’t be doing this and that’s what happened. So, I don’t know.”

Shembo's name has been flying around the Internet as the accused rapist LONG before he broke his silence.

Way to go, Notre Dame. As if the child abuse scandal surrounding the Catholic Church isn't bad enough, now even a frickin Catholic university can't protect female students (Seeberg went to another Catholic college nearby, but that's beside my point). In 2011, Notre Dame reached a settlement with the US Department of Education after the Seeberg suicide which included:reforms to sexual assault investigation procedures. (Part 2 of that special September 2011 report is here, part 3 here.) Meanwhile, the USDOE is investigating the University of Michigan for its handling of a 2009 rape accusation against football player Brendan Gibbons. (The university expelled Gibbons at the end of 2013 over that rape accusation...WAY too late.)

The Chicago Tribune reported on Seeberg's father's response to Shembo.

He denies he did anything wrong. She said he did. There has been no trial. Thus, kelly1mm Feb 2014 #1

Cover-ups are usually worse than the crime. Ooh here we go again with an attempt to be "neutral"...is it really the right thing to do when it comes to rape victims? It's true that rapists lie, and people can and do lie about being abused...but c'mon shouldn't a progressive forum BELIEVE rape victims?

automatically believe a statement made by anyone, certainly not based in anyway on the content of the statement. What is seems to me you are saying is that a statement alleging rape (or sexual assault) made by someone should be taken at face value. I disagree. Again, not in any way BECAUSE it is a rape or sexual assault allegation, but just because I don't take ANY allegation made by someone at face value.

Now, do I STRONGLY believe the allegations made should be investigated fully? Yes I do. Were they in this case? I don't know. All I can see from reading the article is that there was a police and university investigation and that no charges were brought and ND stated that the conduct did not violate their policy. Not enough information presented for me to know if the investigation was legitimate or just a cover-up.

and how many ugly incidents never even makes the newspapers, I'd say a cover-up is very likely...
