Plus it would be in the geostrategic interest of our ruling elite.

Those two facts pretty much guarantee the "yes" to your question.

To not do so makes us nothing more than a paper tiger and a green light to others to run amok over others. That is why I took a strong stand on Syria and supported the president's hard line. Which worked (to some extent, still a lot of people dying there just not by chemical weapons).

Rather than the other way around. That had been some of South's immediate reaction to various Northern military and terrorists attacks over the years. The only thing that prevented invasions from the South was the presence of US troops in the region.

When I was stationed in South Korea back in 1986, one such invasion almost happened. Only after the Commander of US Forces threatened to remove every single US service person off the peninsula had the South relented it plans to invade the North, which was in response to a terrorist attack by the North at Kimpo Airport.

Even though it was really bad when South Korea was ruled by a military dictatorship, there are still continuing rumblings from the South's goverment yearning for force reunification.

Our job over the years has been to keep the South from going north rather than the other way around.

you would see the same response you will see about Russia invading Ukraine or when they invade George. If North Korea attacked the South or Japan you would see a war. The main reason is support. The US likes to pretend we still support the Nationalists in Taiwan like we did in the 50's, 60's and 70's but we don't but we do still support South Korea maybe even more than we did in the 50's. Its also an economic thing, the big wigs don't want to piss China off and hurt their profits but who cares about North Korea? What do they give to the world, nothing.

And there's just no way China would risk destabilizing the market with an invasion of Taiwan.
