This was no small decision. Four generations of Orr men had been Eagles, including Ron and Andrew's older brother. Andrew had spent years working toward Scouting's highest rank, and was just months from reaching it.
But the Boy Scouts had decided to admit gays, and Ron Orr, a tall, soft-spoken man with a firm handshake, is clear about his Christian faith and what it says about homosexuality: It is a sin that cannot be tolerated.
His son agreed. He would forgo the century-old BSA for Trail Life, which officially launched just last month.
"It felt like I'd be hitting something higher than Eagle in terms of achievement," Andrew said, in an interview.
So Orr and his son left BSA and set out with other families to build a new organization based on what they believe to be Christian values. Orr is a regional organizer who speaks to churches and groups about Trail Life. His son now aspires to achieve a Freedom Award, the new group's highest rank.

Trail Life members move their arms as they sing "Taps" during a meeting in North Richland Hills, Texas. Trail Life USA, a new Christian-based alternative to the Boy Scouts of America, excludes openly gay members.

(49,212 posts)is teh evil feminism. Considering that almost nobody's ever heard of the American Heritage Girls, let alone actually seen a troop out in the world doing something, it's a safe bet that Trail Life is going nowhere fast.

(863 posts)Back in the 1960s I was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout. But I was also a Stockader and my sister was a Pioneer Girl. These two groups were organized by churches of the Berean Bible Fellowship. I had an uncle that went to that church and since it was in our neighborhood we went to these youth activities. Looking back on it, it was very similar to Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, uniforms with patches, camping and camping skills, a good place for dads to spend time with their kids, etc. But every weekly meeting also had a religion segment, memorizing Bible verses, or hearing a talk by one of the adults about some Bible story.
My recollection was that the church was evangelical, but not bat shit crazy. More than half of the kids that were Stockaders were also in a scout troop, and the Stockaders leaders did not disparage the scouting program.
These groups still exist at Berean Bible Fellowship churches. Maybe the group that created Trail Life don't have the same "Christian values" as the Bereans? So many of these "Christian" organizations spend a lot of time explaining why their group are the "real" Christians and are "better" than the other affiliations.

(1 post)A fine group. Accepted Jews such as my friend, Johnny Rabb. Nothing to disparage as far as this institution is concerned.
