LOS ANGELES (AP) Will and Jaden Smith have something they can bond over. They were both awarded Razzies for "After Earth."
Jaden was selected as worst actor for his role in the sci-fi flop about a father and son stranded on an untamed earth, while the elder Smith was chosen as worst supporting actor at Saturday's Golden Raspberry Awards, which lampoons Hollywood's awards season on the eve of the Oscars. The duo was also selected as worst screen combo by online voters.
"After Earth" tied with "Movie 43" for the most prizes. The raunchy comedy earned Razzies for worst picture, screenplay and director.
Tyler Perry as feisty alter-ego Madea was picked as worst actress for "A Madea Christmas."

(73,630 posts)People forget that it was directed by M. Night Shamalamadingdong, who's been stinking up the screens with everything made after "Unbreakable."
If the movie had a better director there might have been a better outcome.

(24,365 posts)First of all....
"M. Night Shamalamadingdong"
Secondly, how could anyone do a better job of directing a budding relationship between a boy and a giant eagle?

(73,630 posts)I didn't think that the production and effects were bad at all. M. Night has this tendency of turning his characters into emotionless automatons. The pace of his movies are always too slow and plodding. That's intentional. It's his way of trying to make a movie seem brooding and he always tries to use the entire movie for a single emotional payoff at the end. In order to do that, he ends up boring the audience for 95% of the movie.
Better actors couldn't save the movie at all, and mediocre actors usually do better under great directors. Compare Mark Walberg in M. Night's horrible The Happening vs. his work for Scorsese in The Departed. It's like night and day.
Had this movie been directed by someone like the Wachowskis or, better yet, Del Toro, even with the same cast, I'm sure that it would have been a better movie.
Although acting is very important, I've understood for years since I've had cinema classes that direction and editing are the things that have the greatest effect on a film's outcome.

(45,319 posts)into a vanity deal with preset casting of nepotistic nature. You get what you get 'cause you got what you got. Directors who are 'good with actors' get that reputation to a huge degree by making good casting choices not by editing bad performances into less terrible final products. Garbage in, garbage out.

(36,988 posts)the director and most of the actors.
I like Smith's humor in his films which make his films enjoyable even if they are serious or suspenseful, this one had none..... I gave it a 4 out of 10 on IMBD.
I don't blame the director for the over acting father and son team that he had to work with.

(36,988 posts)Although not credited on the finished film, co-writer/producer Will Smith was responsible for much of the movie's direction. While M. Night Shyamalan was primarily in charge of the blocking (composition of shots, placement of the camera) and the visual aspects of the film (color and design), Will Smith who personally coached Jaden Smith in his performance and dictated the development of the story and the on-screen action.
Will Smith personally hired M. Night Shyamalan to direct. Smith had wanted to work with Shyamalan for several years, but couldn't find a suitable project.
Producer/co-writer Will Smith envisioned After Earth (2013) as a multi-platform franchise, including books, graphic novels, and interactive video games, which would all inform and add to the ideas and concepts already developed in the finished film.

(73,630 posts)Smith never tried to get enough outside input to help him achieve his goals. It's a matter of tunnel vision. I've seen this happen before, when one person calls too many of the shots. It usually ends up in disaster.
Thus the poor choice of directors.
Yeah, I blame Smith himself for 55% of this mess and the rest goes on M. Night's shoulders.
