Lois Lerner, Former Top IRS Official, To Testify Before Darrell Issa's Committee

WASHINGTON -- The controversy surrounding the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status will be back in the news this week when a former top official at the organization testifies before Congress.
Lois Lerner, who led the IRS unit that reviewed requests for tax exemptions, will appear before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Affairs this Wednesday, the chairman of that committee, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) told Fox News Sunday.
“Her attorney indicates now that she will testify,” Issa said. “Quite frankly, we believe that the evidence we have gathered causes her, in her best interest, to be summoned to testify.”
Lerner had famously pleaded the Fifth when she was brought before the committee after the IRS targeting controversy first arose. And she angered members when she read a statement before declining to answer any follow-up questions. Republicans accused her of waiving her Fifth Amendment rights.
