Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forumsoh for the love of reason. No one is running around DU praising Putin
No one on the left is doing that.
On the other hand, plenty of folks are running around insisting that that is happening and chastising the non-existent Putin lovers for purportedly cheering his invasion of the Crimea.
Several posters are ginning up as much Putin and Russia hate as they can possibly muster.
Why? I don't know. Maybe it's that these guys have a need to have everything bright line good/evil.
I'm convinced that that's a very dangerous perspective.
In any case, it's contemptible bullshit.
Yeah, yeah. Putin is the most evil being on the planet and boogie man specter ghost of hitler stalin. or whatever.

(25,699 posts)Is that there's a lot of people on Du who really could not ever give a flying fuck about gay people except to use as ammunition. I can think of at least eight people with "LGBT-friendly" avatars for example, who refused to respect Chelsea Manning as Chelsea, instead demanding that she be referred to as Bradley - or in a few cases as "it."

I can think of one in particular, who made it his sole purpose in life back a few years back to make DU suck as much as possible for its LGBT members. He finally received the most richly deserved and long overdue tombstone in the history of DU for referring to LGBT equality as "a fabulous pink pony." Now, having returned to DU, his heart bleeds for the poor gay folk of Russia. He is DU's very own Harvey Milk.
Sure. Pull the other one.
All of the gay members of DU will recognize it. They think we are too stupid to realize when we are used as a political shield, but we most certainly are not stupid, and we can't be for our own survival.

She is a modern day Paul Revere who helped to expose our hypocrisy, illegal killings and dealings with dictators. She performed an amazing service for this country and is unjustly sitting in jail when she deserves a fucking medal. I put up many threads advocating for Chelsea when all that was going down. Chelsea Manning is whats great about America.

(7,321 posts)btw, I fervently believe in our rights to privacy.. some would say, I'm a bit strident on that subject, which is why I appreciated Snowden's efforts to expose the fact that we actually don't have it. Over the past year, I and other Snowden supporters were/are viciously attacked and accused of being Putin supporters, curiously.
In the mix of the current geopolitical events, that accusation surfaces in certain threads from time to time. Some have suggested/implied since we don't support military engagement against Russia, it's evidence that our allegiance lies with Putin. I'm paraphrasing.. (I won't link or i.d. those remarks)...actual comments were much nastier. It is rather curious to me.
On the thread we squabbled, I think I weighed in without realizing some may not be aware of how pervasive domestic spying actually is, making the assumption that it's "common knowledge" now. Note to Self: Always remember: To "Assume Makes an Ass of You and Me".. old but important truism, not to be forgotten.

It's so freaking absurd I cannot imagine the argumentative leap other than to realize that some aren't very concerned with any position, as long as a certain party or politician is defended to the hilt.
Why is attacking policy the same thing as attacking a party or a politician? My God, all of us aren't going to agree 100% of the time, and if we did, that would be frightening!

(24,544 posts)If there was no Putin love on DU, then why did the OP feel the need to make this thread? Joshcryer, MADem and a few others were eating folk's UP a few months ago that were doing the pro-Putin stuff? Did that never happen?
And why did EarlG feel the need to make it one of DU's Pic of the Day a few months ago when the pro-Putin crowd were saying that the war in Syria that didn't happen was a victory for Putin? According to this group, that never happened. Yes, this group and again, ALWAYS THE SAME GROUP, is trying to rewrite history as you said "in the name of the personal embarrassments of being wrong so fucking often." And it's funny (and pathetic) as hell.
cali
(114,904 posts)I posted this thread because there are people who are making up the shit I call out in the OP. That simple. and seeing as YOU have seen fit to call out duers, link to comments that prove your claims.
And yes, there were people claiming that Syria was a victory for Putin- both here and at editorial boards. That is largely analysis, not praise.
For the record, dear, I've never said anything like that. And though I was very much against any military intervention in Syria, I believed that the Assad forces committed the mass gassing.
I don't live in your little good/evil black/white, simple world.
I think Putin is an arrogant, dangerous meglomaniac. I think there are bad people on both sides in Ukraine and that the right wing was influential in the protests and is now influential in the provisional government. I think the U..S needs to be very careful in how it approaches the Ukrainian crisis and how it deals with Russia and Putin.

This OP and your stupidly nasty OTT response as well as EarlG's graphic and the many OP's in this forum that have noted time and again the amount of people giving Putin a pass prove better than anything that anyone could say that there HAS been plenty of pro-Putin stuff here.

(24,544 posts)And it took you this many hours to come up with this? A pointless slam that somebody already tried to use and did nothing but show his own his own propensity for siding with the bullies and the stalkers here? And now you're doing the same thing???
First of all, as someone who had the better part of 20 hides AT THE SAME TIME and with over 100 people ignoring you, do you really, really, REALLY want to go down this road of who is hypocritical and who is horribly nasty to everyone here??? Really??
Secondly, read the post that you seem for some fevered reason to think actually proves that I am 1/463th as hateful as you are. I am asking someone to leave me alone. I am saying that I have done so about a dozen times. I have REPEATEDLY asked this person to stop responding to me and he refuses. But somehow, in your mind that makes ME the nasty one?? Look downthread. He is STILL RESPONDING TO ME. This time acting as though I am falsely accusing him of alerting on my posts as if I didn't say as plain as day "when he OR HIS FRIENDS alert on my posts." I know he may not have many here, but somebody's alerting on his behalf.
Thirdly, could you actually read what I wrote: Your stalking has been noted by this entire board and if you're happy looking like a deranged psychopath then that is EXACTLY how I'm going to treat you.
"If you are happy LOOKING like a deranged psychopath" are my exact words. That is not the same as calling someone a deranged psychopath and considering that is exactly how that person acts towards me, I have the right to say that. Why exactly does that bother you so much? Wait, I just realized I don't give a shit.

(19,926 posts)The OP felt the need to make the thread because of the accusations of Putin love. The entire point of the OP is that there isn't Putin love. I think it's right there in the title iirc.
You know, I used to think you never had anything of any substance to say until I read your posts in the "white privilege" threads. Very thoughtful and substantive. Why don't you do that same type of post when it comes to issues like this one, or any other threads where you are attempting to defend Obama. It makes your point a whole lot better when you actually argue a point rather than just insult someone whose opinion you don't like. And if you can't defend Obama's policies with a thoughtful and substantive post, well, then, time to wonder why.
But I definitely expect more from you now that I've seen it in action.

cali doesn't need me to be her bodyguard. And I don't recall anyone appointing you hall monitor of DU. And btw... no hall passes needed. This is a PUBLIC message board. You don't like it don't post.
I gave you props where you deserved it. Sadly, you rarely rise to that as evidenced here and many other threads. You can be better than this... yes you can.
EDIT TO ADD: I see you can't even admit you made a mistake so you edit your post after I addressed what you originally said - personal message board - rather than admit you got it wrong so it looks like I repeated something incorrectly. Real big of you.

(24,544 posts)The only thing you've ever posted that I've found even remotely intelligent or useful is the info about my typo upthread. So yeah, there's your props that you seem to so desperately need. Yayyy
And I wish I could return the compliment about "being better" than what you're exhibiting in this thread and now in the other one week old thread that you are now posting in for reasons that only you will EVER be able to understand. If these are your "posting etiquette" lessons, I can understand why no one has ever asked for them before. And probably never will.
cui bono
(19,926 posts)And now you are descending into immaturity.
Come on... you can do better. Why do you purposely choose not to so consistently?
Number23
(24,544 posts)as you could be as if I could be bothered to even PRETEND to care about your opinion of me or my posts.
You then chose to respond to me all in this thread and have then decided (again for reasons only YOU will ever understand) to start posting to me in a 9 day old thread, again being needlessly insulting and demanding that I respond in the same vein as I did in the white privilege threads as if a) I give the first damn what you think about my posts or b) you are in ANY position to dictate to me or anyone else here how we should respond to others.
And then you keep asking me if I realize how insulting I am being??! You need to get a grip. Yesterday.
cui bono
(19,926 posts)I have simply pointed out your rudeness and hypocrisy, and now immaturity. I have let you know this is a public message board, not a private one as you believe it to be. I'm a regular PSA I am.
You're welcome.
Number23
(24,544 posts)I honestly don't know who you think you are, DEMANDING that I participate in this thread in the same way I did in the white privilege threads as if you are my boss or my mama. I would spend a bit of time "pointing out" to you exactly how those posts make you look but others have already noticed. Not to mention that as I truly couldn't care less what you post here or how unhinged your posts make you look, that conversation will just have to wait for another time.
Consider it a kindness that I am beyond bored with you and am now done. Kindness seems to be the very least of the things that you need...
EDIT: Oh my God. Just read your "edit" about my edit where I openly acknowledge that you corrected me on 'public vs private' message board. This is your big gotcha, huh??! Oh my God. That is TRULY beyond tragic. Enjoy your "victory," honey!
cui bono
(19,926 posts)Are you really making such a dramatic accusation and then claiming you are so bored you can't be bothered to point out the example?
Sorry, but that really is funny.
Btw... I noticed you edited a post of yours above rather than just being adult about it and admitting you made a mistake. So now you leave it looking as if I misquoted you. That's really mature and honorable.
Again, do you not see how incredibly rude you are? In every post to me you have exhibited it and with no actual point to be made. Far worse than the post you called cali out on and she was making points in hers. You should read this thread with an open and objective mind so you can see how you come across and how you are being hypocritical. I think you've lost the plot.
EDIT: omgz.... I just caught your edit about my edit... omgz... You really think that's a gotcha? I was merely pointing out how you didn't even have the decency not edit after I had responded without pointing it out. It's called ethics and honor.

I mean, it's bad enough that you think that me changing "private" to "public" is a big deal even when I acknowledged that you corrected me on a minor typo. But you actually think it's important enough to take TWO EDITS recreating the old "unexplained edit" bit that the admins don't even do anymore.
You enjoy your "gotcha!" Relish that "victory." Savor it! By the looks of it, they don't come often! I mean I am literally wiping away tears of laughter as I write this. Any normal, decent and honorable human being would feel horrible and apologize when they see that they wrongly accused someone publicly. But not you. No, you double down with this crazy and completely illogical post.
But maybe I'm selling your short. Perhaps you missed the post where I showed you how wrong your accusation about me was. So I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and point you to it. Here it is:

I don't know why you fancy yourself some kind of moral authority or role model around here. PLEASE believe me when I tell you that you are not and never have been.
And the fact that you are talking about words like "honor" and somehow believe that I owe you an apology OVER A TYPO is the end. You need to find something better to do with your life. The stress of posting on a message board appears to have worn you out completely.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Allow me to give you three...
and lastly what I will be doing every time I see one of your whiny, pointless posts on this web site
Keep savoring that ever so important and obviously cherished "victory" and demanding that apology over a mindlessly insignificant and meaningless typo when YOU were the one that initiated all of this! It's coming annny second now!! Really! Keep holding your breath. That's it!

I've already told you, and it is clear from reading the subthread, that this is not about a typo.

It doesn't concern me if Russia is dealing with the destabilization in their region. It's logical to me that they're doing something in their interest which they have long historical, cultural, and ethnic ties to. We should watch it closely, of course.. but at this juncture I'm not seeing the justification for beating war drums here, which is what I'm reacting to here on du and the red-baiting smears have been beyond the pale. (7,321 posts)It's been a few days since I wrote that post, and I've been striving to better understand the geopolitical components involved in this 'Clash of the Titans' drama being played out.
At first glance it seems complicated.. a number of players with competing agendas, each armed with their own propaganda mechanisms, media pundits, bloggers, etc spinning deceptive narratives in varying degrees depending on one's point of view.
But I don't think it's all that complicated, really. Not if a broader perspective is taken into account with regard to the unquenching thirst and desire for world dominance and economic hegemony.
There is no question in my mind that the West has greatly overstepped it's position with very predictable consequences. We have refused to heed the call for self-restraint when it comes to meddling with internal affairs of fledgling democracies in the region and simultaneously expanding military presence on the doorsteps of Russia vis a vis NATO.
The response to this 'nose thumbing' from one imperialist to the other is perfectly predictable.
While we wait for the Second Act of this drama to commence, maybe some level of rational thought will prevail, one hopes.

(53,012 posts)When no one who knows anything about the situation thinks the US will become militarily involved in the region. Even John McCain, who never met a war he didn't like, says it's not a plausible option. And then why some uncritically believe everything a former KGB agent says? How is it possible for some to justify the Russian takeover of Crimea while opposing US military intervention? It's interesting to learn that people who have claimed to be anti-war aren't at all. They happily justify it when Russia wields it.
And why for fuck's sake do references to communist and anti-communist keep being bandied about? Russia hasn't been communist in over twenty years. How can anyone expect anyone to take them seriously when they make such absurdly uninformed statements? I don't claim to know much about this. I also find it offensive that some on DU are advocating a isolationist view, that the US should take no part in helping other countries (non-military intervention). It is early 20th century thinking. We should still play a role in the world to peacefully resolve matters. The view that we should "keep our nose out of other people's business" is naive and stupid.
Personally I think the situation in North Korea never gets as much notice as other places. It is always these hotflash situations that draw the most attention (the Middle East being one of them).

davidpdx
(22,000 posts)I specifically said non-military intervention. In North Korea for instance we need to try to continue to bring them to the table to work out an agreement like we are in Iran. At the same time, private citizens can advocate for North Korean refugees. Neither of these involve the military.
There is no proof the US or the US military is involved in the situation in Ukraine aside from the diplomatic talks that have taken place. The only hypocrisy is coming from the mouths of the conspiracy theorists.

(7,321 posts)It's difficult to get to the root of concerns, when blanket "anti-american rhetoric" (read red-baiting) accusations are bandied about as to have any serious meaning.
to criticize imperialistic policy is not to be anti-american unless of course, you favor an Imperialistic America.
Wrt to "non-military" intervention around the world.. as destructive and harmful military "interventions" (don't you just love that term in this context?) are, it isn't the only type of harm we inflict on other nations, courtesy U.S. Taxpayers.
That stuff needs to be closely examined, discussed and debated. Additionally we would do well to avoid framing criticism as "anti-american", it does little to advance understanding or enlighten others of one's point of view.
I completely agree with your concerns as regards North Korea, a strange silence on the subject as you correctly put it, all these other hot flash situations get all the attention.
One has to admit that the clash of two super powers is pretty major news!

North Korea is a complete disaster as this point and anything that is done needs to be done very carefully. The wrong move would have some very serious consequences for everyone involved.
