Hey Republicans: know what Eisenhower would have done in Ukraine?

Probably the same thing that he did in 1956 when tens of thousands of Soviet troops invaded Hungary to quash an uprising, killing thousands: Ike offered some fine words of encouragement, wished the Hungarians luck, and said it would be nuts to risk a war over it by taking military action.

I think we can safely say that General Eisenhower was one of the baddest bad asses of all time (although compared to our current president he was a screaming, flaming, mind-blowing Liberal). But Ike knew when the price of war was higher than its return.

So to the Republican crazies who want to go to war with Russia: grab a side arm and go yourself. Good luck. Just don't drag us sane and decent people into your lunatic blood fantasies.

There's not a lot behind this comment, only that the other day, by boss came by and was talking to the guy across the aisle from me. I told him later during our 1:1 that I'd been tempted to tackle him and give him a sandwich. He laughed (I love my boss).

let us not forget that his admin overthrew democratically elected
governments in both Guatemala and Iran - and helped to organize
horrible repression afterwards. He totally knew about it.

Eisenhower on taxes:

What I have said is, reduction of taxes is a very necessary objective of government–that if our form of economy is to endure, we must not forget private incentives and initiative and the production that comes from it. Therefore, the objective of tax reduction is an absolutely essential one, and must be attained in its proper order.

...

So, whether we are ready to face the job this minute or any other time, the fact is there must be balanced budgets before we are again on a safe and sound system in our economy. That means, to my mind, that we cannot afford to reduce taxes, reduce income, until we have in sight a program of expenditures that shows that the factors of income and of outgo will be balanced. Now that is just to my mind sheer necessity.

In other fucking words, his version of Clinton's "math, stupid." Or vice versa if you want to credit Eisenhower for that.

Doh, the beginning of the precipitous decline of unions appears to have happened under him:

Got to nail this one down. I still say FDR enabled it but he had to have triggered something.

Insisted.

Ike expanded Social Security by 10 million people. Meh.

Ike warned us about the Military-Industrial Complex. Meh.

Ike appointed Liberals to the Supreme Court. Meh.

Ike ended the Korean War. Almost instantly. Meh.

Oddly, I was once allowed to drive on those militaristic roads. That one time being my whole life. Meh.

Eisenhower also expanded social security. They don't make republicans - or even many democrats - like that anymore.
