Baby's death 'may be coincidence': Vaccine maker

Baby's death 'may be coincidence': Vaccine maker

The latest case of a baby who died after being injected with hepatitis B vaccine made by Shenzhen Kangtai Biological Products Company (Biokangtai), a vaccine maker based in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, was possibly a coincidence, said a spokesman of the company on Monday.

A 1-month-old girl died in Guangzhou on Feb 27, within 24 hours of being injected with hepatitis B vaccine made by the company, Yangcheng Evening News reported on Feb 28.

The girl was born in Hunan province on Jan 22, and was injected with hepatitis B vaccine made by another company soon after she was born. After the Spring Festival holiday, her parents took her to Guangzhou, where her father works.

On Feb 26, after the girl turned 1-month-old, her parents took her to a local health service center for a second shot of the vaccine. This time the vaccine used was made by Biokangtai.

The girl died at 3 am the following day.

China Probes Vaccine Makers Amid Heightened Scrutiny

China’s food and drug regulators are coming down on the country’s largest makers of the hepatitis B vaccine, even after clearing the manufacturers as a potential cause of nine infant deaths.

The country’s food and drug watchdog halted vaccine production at Beijing Tiantan Biological Products Corp. , Shenzhen Kangtai Biological Products Co. and Dalian Hissen Bio-Pharm, citing a failure to meet new production quality, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. It didn’t elaborate on which quality requirements were unmet.

...

Recent reports will likely increase the demand for import vaccinations, which are already available in the Chinese market, though at a higher cost, said Helen Chen, a Shanghai-based partner and director of consultancy L.E.K. Consulting.

Food and drug safety remain major issues in China, where food scandals —often driven by economic motives—frequently appear in the news. In 2012, regulators halted the sale of some drugs after testing revealed their capsules contained excessive chromium levels.

Analysts say that some safety hazards have emerged as manufacturers look for ways to cut costs amid increasing pricing pressures in the health-care system. The central government, which overhauled the country’s health-care system over the past four years and extended national insurance to 95% of the population, has encouraged provincial governments to cut health-care costs and prices of so-called essential drugs, which include, among many, Chinese traditional medicines and antibiotics.

Medicine makers and big companies in China have had some problems with quality over the years.

I am sure defenders of those companies will rush in and proclaim everything safe if it does not prop up their pet issues though - and anyone looking into evidence that these companies might not have the best track record and quality should just accept that they cannot make mistakes.

I am all for vaccines and am also for personal choice when it comes to getting them (your body, your choice).

Some folks see this as a religion - anything negative means their god might not exist so ignore the problems and attack the motives of the person posting it.

Personally - I would trust something made in the US more than China when it comes to medicine. But then I am not trying to blind myself because over the issues of manufacturing and safety to promote an ideal.

When you have a lot of windows open, it's easy to forget what site you're on. I catch myself sometimes about to post orchid-related stuff. On this site, we're largely against Chinese-made stuff due to quality control issues and that whole slave labor thing. HTH, HAND.

We are on a site that discusses topics from all over the world. And as you noted Chinese made stuff has quality issues.

This is one of those times and is not a swipe at the US or vaccines here.

If I posted something about textiles in Lesotho it wouldn't mean I was against buying clothing

If nothing else this was a dig at China.

I post stories that about criminals that happen to be women and I am posting negative stories about women because I have an agenda.

Post something about drones and I hate Obama.

Post a story about some stupid thing a school does and hate teachers and public education.

Story about crappy chinese product and I am anti-vax.

Maybe, sometimes, people just post stories about things because you know what interest others and yourself. Perhaps the folks who so often find agendas in the post of others are just reflecting on what they themselves do. I dunno.

I read twitter, reddit, usnpl, and a slew of news sites a day looking for things of interest to post and what I get in return is 'hey, you must be up to something.

Yeah. Was bored, reading news, watching a show.

I think from here on out all my posts will have a disclaimer to help out some folks.

I've learned my lesson. No more vaccines for me... when I'm in China-- administered specifically in the Guangzhou province, and it's a Hep B vaccine made by Biokangta.

Whew... missed it by *that* much, too!
