Democrat Wendy Davis has become the first female gubernatorial nominee in Texas since former Gov. Ann Richards.
The Fort Worth state senator formally clinched her party's nomination Tuesday night. She headlines a Democratic ticket that in November will seek the party's first statewide victory since 1994, which was also Richards' last year in office.
Neither Davis nor her Republican opponent, Attorney General Greg Abbott, faced a competitive primary. Gov. Rick Perry is not seeking re-election after a record 14 years in office.
The 50-year-old Davis became a national Democratic star last summer with a nearly 13-hour filibuster over new abortion restrictions. Her fundraising outpaced Abbott in the last half of 2013 but she's still considered a heavy underdog.

(94,333 posts)I contributed to Wendy's campaign but I still think it's a mistake for her to run; 4 years from now may be different, but this is the State that elected Ted Cruz by 1.2 million votes two years ago.

(29,414 posts)so pain is nowhere to be found. The problem is swallowing, especially when your mouth is lower than you feet. I had to sit up a few times because I was getting anxious from not being able to swallow well. However, they did let me do my own suction, and that helped immensely!
I am childfree, so I'm glad I don't know what your day was like

(9,286 posts)Though I still wish she was running for Lt. governor instead.
In the State of Texas the Lt. Governor has way more power than the actual Governor. Hell the comptroller has more power than the Governor.
But being Governor is still symbolic and winning that would still be a huge blow to the rethugs here

(10,597 posts)These pink tennis shoes are dancing for you! Rise up, Texas Democrats and get this woman in office. Having Rick "big hair" Perry for Governor for 8 years was like having GWB for President for 8 years. YOU CAN DO THIS!

If the election turnout is like this, Wendy Davis will be just burning money from now 'til November.
Please tell me why I am wrong!

(15,774 posts)surrounding the Texas Capital for a special session in 100+ temps in July....things WILL change. You can bet these good ol boys are STILL washing the shit stains out of their drawers. Women is Texas are generally too busy running things to get involved in politics (aka silly boys games). The one thing you don't want to rile up is Texas women-and the bull shit like trans vaginal probes and Capitol police searching women's purses for tampons and pads and treating those like potential terrorist weapons (proven to be a bogus claim) was the last straw.
I know many GOP women that have told me in private that they are voting for Wendy in the general election. Women in Texas are furious at these knuckle heads. They crossed a line and women are preparing to kick some ass.

(94,333 posts)...and I say this as someone who gave Wendy support. "Thousands of people" at a protest is a miniscule percentage of actual voters. Consider the following:
> In 2012, with President Obama on the ballot to encourage Democrats to come out, Texas elected Ted Cruz by more than a 1 million vote margin.
> In Tuesday's Senate and Governor Primaries, there were 500,000 Democratic votes and 1.3 million Republican votes.
There's movement among the Hispanic voters, and in 2016, Texas may be more competetive; by 2018 we may have a shot at winning State offices. Not today.
