Folks - this is why you call the gas company before you go digging anywhere!!!!

One killed, at least 7 hurt as blast devastates townhouses

EWING, N.J. - Family photos crashed to wood floors. Windows shattered. Insulation was hurled through the air and draped barren trees in sheets of pink.

A gas explosion Tuesday afternoon transformed a townhouse complex into a dark landscape of destruction, killing one person and injuring at least seven utility workers.

"I thought it was the end of the world," said Robert Conrad, 74, who lives about six units away from the home where the explosion apparently was centered. He rushed out with a coat and camera, leaving behind his wallet and two cats.

<<<snip>>>

It was not clear Wednesday what set off the blast. Workers earlier had damaged a gas line, apparently leading to a gas leak.

It's absolutely devestating what happened there - homes totally destroyed, 6-7 people and one person has died. I'm not sure if the people digging made the proper calls but that is why you call the gas company and check with them first before you go digging.

If it was a government group this won't bode well for Christie. Last thing he needs on his hands is government paid employees out there digging without following procedures first of making the call.

PSE&G is making it sound like it was just a contractor. They had their own people on site.

Public Service Electric & Gas Co., the energy utility provider for the area, said one of its contractors had been working Tuesday morning to replace an underground electrical line. One of the crew members involved in the digging “struck something,” police said, and alerted PSE&G at 11:45 a.m. Utility workers arrived minutes later, “responding to an odor in the air,” PSE&G construction director Mike Gaffney told reporters.

And if it was a contractor working for the E part, even more lack of coordination.
