From my email... sorry, but I do not know the source(s) of these maps.
This map shows the world divided into 7 sections (each with a distinct color) with each section containing 1 billion people.
This map shows (in white) where 98 percent of Australia's population lives.
It may not come as a surprise but more people live inside the circle than outside of it.
This map shows countries (in white) that England has never invaded. There are only 22 of them.
The line in this map shows all of the world's Internet connections in 1969.
These are all the rivers that feed into the Mississippi River.
This map shows how much space the United States would occupy on the moon.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,360 posts)FWIW, I lived in the yellow part on that Australia map.
Alice Springs, NT. Late 1972 through '74

(24,360 posts)And was stationed here;

We had a house in town, I attended school at Alice Springs High School...
And.....I absolutely loved it. Every second.
My dad sent us all home about 4 or 5 months before his tour ended and I BEGGED him to let me stay.
I think I was 13 when we got there...hard to remember the exact month we arrived, but since the seasons and therefore the school year is opposite here in the US, I know it was summertime here/winter there because I had to go right back to school after just getting out for summer vacation in the states!
He bought a Land Rover like this one;
We went all over in that. Took it down to Ayers Rock (Uluru), we would take it for weekends out and about....
I had the opportunity to look after a Thoroughbred while I was there, A 16 hand Gelding named Robber Boy;
(That's not me up, BTW)
Had an absolute blast with that horse.
I got a chance to spend time on a Cattle Station - a small place of a mere 787 square miles! 5 or 6 hour drive from Alice Springs, 3/4 of that on dirt roads. You went to town once a month, if that. Nearest neighbor was 35 miles away.
"How was it"?
Wonderful.
I got the chance to go back several times in the 1990's when I was working in IndyCar racing. They raced in Surfers Paradise, on the Gold Coast of Queensland. I would love to go back and spend 2 or 3 months in an RV and go all over. Take the train from Melbourne to Perth and from Adelaide to "The Alice" and up to Darwin. When we were there, the rail line ended in Alice Springs.
Yes...I loved it. And for anyone reading this, if you EVER get the SLIGHTEST CHANCE to go to Australia, DO NOT PASS IT UP!

(115,677 posts)hopefully not too far in the future including Alice Springs, Uluru, Melbourne, Darwin, etc. Having lived out in AK for years, I want to do the warm version.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,360 posts)Keep this in mind;
The continent is roughly the same size as the lower 48, but with the population of the LA/San Diego Metroplex.
There are more miles of limited access, interstate style freeway in the LA Basin than there is in the entire continent of Australia.
Aussies, by and large, tend to be rather hedonistic. That is to say, they don't suffer fools easily but they love to have fun AND THEY DO! Unlike the US where we tend to "Live to work", Over there, like many European countries as well, they "work to live". Imagine if the Kentucky Derby was a national holiday. The Australian equivalent, the "Melbourne Cup" almost is. Everything stops when the Cup race goes off.
Huge difference.
Take your time. Visit small towns. Go to the outback.
Have a blast!

(115,677 posts)The strategy is when we pay for things, use dollar bills, collect all change and in 10 yrs we will go, using whatever we have. Mr UP wants to go too so I am thinking a month with sib, a month with husband. Or just go, get a camping van and just go.

(3,595 posts)Now, what would such a map look like with the number of countries the U.S. had not invaded?
