(39,343 posts)Aw Jeez, and who gets to name these things? If you want to name a frigid cold blast, name it Beth, she was cold.
(all apologies to anyone who is named Elizabeth, Beth, or any derivation. I only speak for my own experiences.)

(40,416 posts)We're going to have sub-zero and 30 mph gusts tonight here. And the f*cking power company cut down all my trees. So the house is going to take a hit.
Oh well, $2,400 in heating bills already this winter. Current fuel will get through to autumn. The damned furnace broke three times. Fixed it twice myself. Third time, called a guy in. He said I did a good job on the other two repairs. It's an old oil burner. It's still a rickety old thing. But it's worked for many decades.

(5,252 posts)allegedly 4-8 inches between 10pm and 1pm tomorrow with 40mph winds
Will make this winter #2 in snowfall, and it's top 5 coldest winter in history. Safe to say, this is the worst winter in Chicago history, by some margin.
EDIT: Monday was the warmest day of the year, 54F, and the previous days were in the 40s. Lake Michigan was at a near record 93% frozen, but after the few days of mild temps, it was 77% on Monday.

(5,252 posts)who, like you, simply can't help themselves that we don't get to mock them because their dry, hot weather usually results in thousands of acres and hundreds of homes going up in flames.
Texasgal
(17,045 posts)when it hits 101 for days on end. Trust me on that.
I hope you keep warm. I am sorry that I came across as mocking. I am sorry.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)Hell, it hits 100 here and we still have 95% humidity in June and July. Frankly, I prefer the ice storm we had back in January to that.
WhaTHellsgoingonhere
(5,252 posts)I mean, typically it's not a big deal because, since I moved to Chicago from California 23 years ago, I can *still* count the number of bad winters on one hand. This coming from a guy from the always mild Bay Area. Winters aren't the big deal we grew up thinking they were. But as I noted above, this winter is THE worst in Chicago history by a large margin dating back to the 1880s.
The teasing comes with the territory, I understand, and I've never taken exception to it. All in good fun. But I can't impress upon them that 24 days with temps below 0 and wind chills down to -26 isn't just unusual, it's mindnumbingly historic. But they just think "it sucks to be you because it's always like that in Chicago...even in the summer."
Some perspective: Last winter, we had 3 inches of snow in January. This winter, over 33 inches in January alone and approaching 70 inches for the winter. The last two winters we had just less than 40 inches...combined! And during a typical winter, we have 2 days below zero (we're at 24 this year and the record is 25).
OK...sorry, thanks for listening, Tex
Texasgal
(17,045 posts)80 degrees here is actually too warm for this time of year which is why I am dreading a heated summer. I am not ready for this just yet. I actually had to turn the AC on today.
I hope you keep warm and safe. We are getting that front that seems to be affecting everyone as well. Our temps will go down. I cannot imagine that much snow... I just cannot.
Spring is on the forefront however! Winter is almost done! I hope you get through this okay!
Aerows
(39,961 posts)It was in the high 60's today, raining and humidity way into the 80% if not 90% after the rain.
This is March. Trust me, by May? I'll be squalling for something even remotely approaching cool. By July, I'll be willing to trade my last dollar and possession for a Winter Storm Vulcan.
WhaTHellsgoingonhere
(5,252 posts)How will that affect you?
Aerows
(39,961 posts)We had an incredibly mild summer in 2013, and very few tropical disturbances that affected us. I suspect we are going to have a very nasty summer in store for us this year.
WhaTHellsgoingonhere

(2,104 posts)"A new report from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center suggests changes could be on the way for weather patterns across the U.S. and the globe.
According to the report, the chance of an El Niño reemerging this year has increased. And, if the models from the report play out, that could mean fewer named storms in the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season and potential drought relief for parts of California later this year."

(40,416 posts)Most of the heavy stuff is going to pass to the south, Grand Rapids and Southern Michigan is going to get it again. Forecast here does not predict any accumulation, so we may get an inch, if that.
It's going down below zero during the night, so all that melted snow will be ice in the morning. The next week will be winter again. Early spring sucks after a snowy winter. March is indeed coming in like a lion, like they say.

(7,153 posts)The Weather Channel got the idea of naming winter weather systems a couple of years ago.
This time they are using the Greco-Roman pantheon.
Vulcan is the Roman forge god.

Earth_First
(14,910 posts)The Weather Channel began naming winter storms in 2011 and then again in 2013. The National Weather Service issued a directive to not participate in naming winter storms through a directive to it's staff. Although the NWS names hurricanes, with winter storms, the just unpredictability and redevelopments makes forecasting where a storm begins, and/or redevelops/ends. The thought being that it downplays the science and preparedness of weather forecasting.
I tend to agree with the NWS train of thought on the topic...

(40,416 posts)At least until she gets a walking cast, if she didn't fracture her femur.
Hope she has somebody to take good care of her. She's going to need lots of TLC.
Broken bones in the winter are terrible. (Not that they're much better in the summer.)
Send her my regards and thoughts and a hug.
Cha
(297,158 posts)The pain was really bad night but today she went to an orthopedic specialist who upped her dosage to two.. It's her fibula and she has an aircast with a boot.. and a walker. She wants to get back to work(teacher) as soon as the pain allows her.. maybe a couple of weeks.
For now she's downstairs camped out on the sofa. Thank you so much for your regards~ Poor thing. I can imagine.

(297,158 posts)too much of a good thing isn't working for ya?
Random pic of Kaua'i.. to cheer you up.. I hope..
Kilauea Point, HI
Kaua`i, the Garden Island, has six minor navigational lights and two primary seacoast lights, Kilauea Point Light and Nawiliwili Light, adorning its shoreline. In 1907, the Lighthouse Board asserted that a first-order light at Kilauea Point, the northernmost point of the inhabited Hawaiian Islands, was needed to serve as a landfall light for ship traffic from the Orient. Two years later, Kilauea Point, a narrow, lava peninsula protruding from the northern shore of Kaua`i, was purchased from the Kilauea Sugar Plantation Company "for the consideration of one dollar," but before construction could begin, a method for delivering supplies to the remote point had to be developed. Due to the lack of good roads in the area, the decision was made to bring the materials in by sea.

I'm heading to TX next week. Hopefully my arthritic aches will be remedied and the sunlight deprivation will be cured, and I'll return to crocus blooms Things are on an upswing for me and the year looks promising work wise.

(297,158 posts)It could have been worse timing for her.. she took her family to Disney World for 10 days in Feb for winter break so she had some good R&R goin' on. And, now she has friends to drive her where she needs to go and will be back teaching school in about two weeks she hopes. We'll see.

The bright side of your sister's injury is she may be healed come summertime vacation. Teachers need their breaks.

(2,921 posts)but I plan on having a good time in Houston. There are only 3 states left to visit after this...Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alaska. There has always been blue spots wherever I've traveled.

(8,554 posts)it's predicted to drop down to 40 degrees tonight, with rain changing to ice pellets as the temperature falls, then snow sometime tomorrow. Three to five inches of snow accumulation expected, with 100% possibility of precip.
My brother was out covering his flower beds back up this evening, when I spoke with him.

(713 posts)to name every snowstorm all of a sudden? I just don't understand. When I was a kid, snow just kind of happened in winter. Starting just the latter half of this winter, every time it snows, the snow "storm" seems to have a name. I think it's ridiculous.

(5,946 posts)Now they have storm history shows and reality shows with people dare deviling, not competitive. I preferred it when they went into depth on weather. Now to noisy to sleep with it on. And the cable channel has just a local weather and traffic report that tells me enough.
