From non sequitur farces Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Childrens Hospital to satirical animated comedies Moral Orel and The Boondocks, Adult Swim has become a haven for experimental and controversial programming. Now, Cartoon Network's late-night programming block is adding another controversial piece to its bizarre menagerie.

Adult Swim announced Monday that they are greenlighting Black Jesus, a new half-hour live-action series from Aaron McGruder, the acclaimed creator of the aforementioned Boondocks. The show finds Jesus living in present day Compton, CA, on a daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers.

Gerald "Slink" Johnson, who lends his voice to Lamar Davis in Grand Theft Auto 5, will play Black Jesus. Charlie Murphy (Are We There Yet), Corey Holcomb (The Cleveland Show) and John Witherspoon (The Boondocks) will also star.

6. Both the Boondocks strip and cartoon were great

The opening scene of Huey walking up to the mic at a fancy outdoor party and saying, "Jesus was black, Ronald Reagan was the devil, and the government is lying about 9-11," setting off a riot amongst all the rich people was great. It was revealed to be a dream with his grandpa slapping him awake and admonishing him for thinking about telling the truth to White people. "Shoot, I'm gonna find a White man and lie to him now."

Fun story - at one of my previous jobs in 1999 or so, my manager was a Black woman. She came into my cubicle to ask me something and noticed I had a Boondocks strip on my wall, and she was surprised and asked, "Isn't that the little boy from the Boondocks?" Yes, that's Huey Freeman, I said. "How do YOU know about him?" Oh, I see! Because I'm WHITE, I can't read and enjoy a comic strip with a predominantly Black cast of characters! Well, you can't read Peanuts unless Franklin is in it then!

The next day I brought in the cartoon book down below, which was a collection of strips from the first Black woman cartoon artist published in newspapers. I have a deep love of comics, the history of comics, and recognized that book as something interesting and rate, etc.

I was her favorite honky after that.

I wonder how McGruder and Adult Swim will approach his new show. The new season of Boondocks will be starting 4/21/14.

for the next stop on the Wheel of Outrage over at FOX. If they've railed against Spongebob just for a global warming-esque episode, you already know they'll do the same to a "Black Jesus" series. Right now, the only question is exactly how they plan to do it.
