I've only seen the one source for this, which now multiple media outlets have picked up. Couldn't they find a second source? I have not seen one.
It was a wildly dodgy story in the first place and has possibly sent the search effort astray.
I don't like the way this is being handled. And the press is sucking badly here.

(40,416 posts)There are few facts. But the original Reuters report has been parroted all over the place. They never vetted the damned report in the first place. No second source. Well then, who cares, we have a scoop! Print it!

Their military waited 24 hrs to dispute a news report published world-wide; they didn't check passengers' passports; they wasted the resources and time of countries and companies who came to their aid; and their airline handled the passengers' grieving families so poorly that one of them felt it was appropriate to throw a bottle of water at their communications rep.
Good grief, fire someone already, because this is simply pathetic.
