Wake up call to the Democratic Party;
Dems are losing the social media "war" which is going to be very important in getting out the vote. The top trending hastag on Twitter is very conservative with no liberal ones to be seen. Here were the top pics right now- 10 min ago.
My theory is the Reichwing propaganda machine (Koch network?) is paying several on there to keep it top trending all day while they have a paid staff to come up with dozens of memes every day as well.
And to make matters worse 95% of radio talk shows are RW format. The liberal talk show radio stations have all been switching to sports or RW formats in the past 2 years.
Edit: Offensive RW memes removed for sensitive viewers.

(90,301 posts)...not at attacking GOP for opposing it and softly wanting little kids to die.
I don't see any of those issues really making an impact amongs general voters

(102,105 posts)And, as important as some may want to make social media, those who vote DEM/Progressive are hardly going to be swayed by this RW racist propaganda.
ErikJ
(6,335 posts)They dont even watch TV anymore. Netflix, Hulu and social media.

(102,105 posts)are likewise too apathetic to vote, in the first place.
I don't doubt the need to get our message across and counter RW BS--using all modes of communication possible. I just don't think the young are this stupid and the trends, in terms of youth opposing conservatism overwhelmingly, seems to bear that out.

(18,184 posts)Remember how before social media there were all those RW chain emails?
This is just the new version of that.
"Perception is reality" is the RW attitude. If reality doesn't agree with them then they just try to change the perception.

(8,646 posts)At least Obama understood the value of the internet for fundraising at least. I think it's a big part of why he won.
The internet can get people elected. Ask left-leaning mayor Naheed Nenshi in Calgary. Someone who was a virtual unknown elected as the first Muslim mayor in Canada in a city known more for being redneck in a province often called 'little Texas'. All because he concocted a 'viral campaign'. Marketing, internet postings and rallies are the reason he is mayor today. Marketing and social media is the reason the 'socialist' NDP is the official opposition here in Canada.
If democrats want to inspire and galvanize support amongst young people and win elections, they will have to get with it with regards to social media. Or, they can just keep doing what they are doing, and occasionally winning elections when the GOP gets so bad even the GOP won't admit they are GOPers.
ErikJ
(6,335 posts)for the worse. Time for the Dem Net to get serious.

(31,464 posts)What a bunch of horseshit. Some stupid Facebook memes are going to swing the election? As if we don't have just as many (or more) even more compelling Right Wing Tea Bag memes circulating? Really? You think this shit is why "we" will lose? What side of "we" are you on, anyway?
GOTV. That's how we'll win, not by publishing bullshit stuff designed to keep the vote home.
ErikJ
(6,335 posts)Teens and 20's are going to Twit Instagram and other things now. I go to Twitter a lot and am getting sick of seeing #tcot top trending 24/7 with these horrible memes.
Atman
(31,464 posts)And ironically enough, it is "older people" that vote, not teens on Twits-a-gram. Are you calling out any of these memes as bullshit? Posting any anti-Tea Bag memes? Or just bringing that crap over here to DU?
What, exactly, are you doing to fight this outrageous trend you've spotted?

(6,335 posts)They have some on there that are obvious paid schills who probably get so much per post. (Koch-topus network probably) I try to respond to as many as a I can in rapid fire but they just keep coming too fast.

We don't do that. Fact is we ofter bicker amongst ourselves trying to do the right thing.
This is a strength we need to learn how to use rather than allow it to be exploited as a weakness.
