Fox News Has “Angry Grandpa” Freakout

http://www.alternet.org/fox-news-has-angry-grandpa-freakout

It’s easy to poke fun at Bill O’Reilly’s freakout over President Obama sitting down with Zach Galifianakis on his satirical Web series “Between Two Ferns.” On one level, it’s a typical case of Angry Grandpa just not getting it – Did he really say “Abe Lincoln would not have done it”? Why, yes he did – but it’s more than that. It’s a case of an entire political demographic panicking over how irrelevant they’re becoming, and how Obama is hastening their passing. To be honest, some in the mainstream media had a comparable reaction to O’Reilly’s – without O’Reilly’s surreal Abe Lincoln reference and right-wing angst. CNN pundit and bipartisan presidential fixer David Gergen brought O’Reilly’s point into the 20thcentury, tweeting:

But even ABC News’ Jim Avila, unbelievably, badgered Jay Carney at his Tuesday briefing about whether Obama had “damaged” the presidency by appearing with the “Hangover” star (and deadpanning mean jokes about the flop that was “The Hangover III”). “How much discussion was there in the White House about the dignity of the office and whether or not, in order to reach these people who don’t watch us at 6:30, or who don’t watch this briefing,” Avila asked Carney. He went on to wonder “how much the dignity of the office might be lost? This is an interview like no other probably ever done by a president.” Beyond the fuddy-duddy concern about the “dignity” of the presidency, traditional media folks are defending their own turf. They know this president, and increasingly other politicians, are learning how to move out beyond the networks and the Sunday shows, to reach a demographic the networks can’t reach: younger people.

As “Between Two Ferns” producer/director Scott Aukerman told New York magazine:

The great part about it is, this president knows how to reach young people in a way that no other president has, and it’s very important that he reach young people with this issue. This is so much better and will attract so much more attention than him going on a Sunday morning show and talking about this issue when most people I know of this generation aren’t even up that early on a Sunday morning.

Erased all the dignity that Dubya 'gained' the office by carrying that fake turkey around for the troops. Very dignified.

And what about Reagan and the open mike outlawing the Soviet Union (bombing begins in 5 minutes).

Presidents get to joke around. Lincoln was shot at the theater. A different type of entertainment, but entertainment just the same. Does O'Reilly get to decide what entertainment is appropriate for the president?

What a buffoon. It's hard to believe ANYONE gives two shits what he thinks.

Deal or No Deal w/Howie Mandel. Yes, it was to pay tribute to a soldier, but Dubya tried out a few jokes, so it wasn't exactly a dignified appearance.

Less dignity than Nixon inviting Elvis to the Oval Office?

Less dignity than Bush I inviting Dana Carvey to the White House?

Kathleen Parker did a column critical of the president as well -- my immediate thought was that she'd had her "get off my lawn" moment.

and was often criticized for it. On one occasion he was (falsely) accused of asking for a comedic song from a friend after meeting McClellan on the battlefield at Antietam--before many of the dead had been buried.

My favorite Lincoln joke: he was once accused of being "two faced." He replied, "If I had two faces, do you really think THIS is the face I'd wear?"

as I was JUST going to point this out. He was a NOTORIOUS practical joker and O'Reilly would have known that had he ever actually CRACKED A BOOK ABOUT LINCOLN.

McClellan had been "preparing" the troops for months and months to march south and, Lincoln, getting impatient with McLellan's inaction, wrote him a letter asking McClellan if he could borrow the troops since McClellan obviously wasn't using them.

Was that Revolutionary War General Ethan Allen visited to England after the war. A man he was visiting tried to embarrass Allen by putting a large portrait of George Washington in the privy. After he had used it, he was asked what he thought of the decorations. Allen said he approved, since "there is nothing to make an Englishman shit faster than the sight of George Washington."

And yes, Lincoln used the word "shit" when telling the story.

I was born during WW2 while my father was in the Army Air Force so I have seen a few presidents. I think President Obama is the coolest president so far and is doing a very good job under difficult circumstances. I am not a regular viewer of Between Two Ferns but I have see a couple of shows before President Obama was on.

I was in the 1st grade when Bill O’Reilly was born and I think he is an old Fuddy Duddy. O’Reilly’s humor would probably be the one liner jokes of the old Vaudeville comics, short and easy to understand.

The media, both the right-wing and the "mainstream", will be pissed because a web interview with a Hollywood actor got more views than any of their newscasts combined. The media needs to know that it was A JOKE!

It seems like the Washington press establishment has always been somewhat "stuffy," however they have really personified the " you damn kids, get off my lawn" mentality since President Obama came into office!

I'm 18 and I enjoyed the interview, but this doesn't mean I'm some "liberal deadbeat teen" who only gets their news from Comedy Central. I'm a pre-law, Dean's List, proud liberal student who has more intelligence than half of the grumpy old conservatives who are attacking myself and my generation!

Wanna see undignified? Check out the many videos of W pretend dancing--with an African dance troop in one, doing a self-consciously clowning soft shoe in another while waiting for something outside the White House. Were these guys concerned about presidential dignity then?
