CATHERINE THOMPSON MARCH 13, 2014, 9:56 AM EDT
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) is standing by comments he made linking a "culture" of men not working in inner cities to poverty, saying the remarks had "nothing to do" with race.
The House Budget Committee chairman told Crew of 42's Lauren Victoria Burke on Wednesday that his comments, made earlier in the day on Bill Bennett's "Morning In America," were taken out of context.
It was a long talk and he asked about the culture and I just went off of that, Ryan told Burke. This has nothing to do whatsoever with race. It never even occurred to me. This has nothing to do with race whatsoever."
This isnt a race based comment its a breakdown of families, its rural poverty in rural areas, and talking about where poverty exists there are no jobs and we have a breakdown of the family," he explained, repeating "This has nothing to do with race.

(13,992 posts)Translation: Paul Ryan's racism is such a part of his personality, to finely ingrained in his DNA, that when he spouts hateful shit like this, he's not even aware that he's doing it. Imagine the damage the guy does when, for political reasons, he wants to keep black folks from voting.

Who does he think he's fooling? Everyone knows that "Inner city" is code for black/brown people, and so does that p.o.s. Ryan. Those words are racist, catering to racists.

(2,672 posts)inner city is a code word for blacks in the conservative culture. Has he ever thought that the reason that poor people don't work is that there are no jobs. I worked at a non-profit that ran job training programs for both rural and inner city poor and yes, most were black. That said, the people in the programs were mostly eager to work and learn job skills and we had many successful people gradate from these programs and find employment that led to better lives for them. This was in the 1970's, why don't we have programs like that anymore? Oh wait! I figured it out, the money used for these programs was cut so we could give more tax breaks to the 1%.

(3,287 posts)have misunderstood what you meant in your original comment. My bad I guess, I just thought given your other dismissive and hateful comments in the past with regard to people that "haven't made it" and live in the "inner cities" that I knew whom you meant. Wink, wink.
I realize that they are not part of your exclusive little group of the haves and therefore are considered to be fair game to some but not all of us.
Belatedly, I do want to thank you for your great show of concern when you washed the clean pots in the soup kitchen during the presidential campaign. I think it showed a lot of the American people where your heart truly is and I shall always remember that. Thank you for the memory..
