Nevada Man Files To Run For Sheriff, Promptly Gets Arrested For Drunk Driving

TOM KLUDT – MARCH 14, 2014, 9:47 AM EDT

They say some members of law enforcement are drunk with power. Ron Rylander was drunk before he was granted any authority. The 51-year-old Rylander turned in his papers on Thursday to run for sheriff of Elko County, Nev. Roughly an hour later, Rylander was arrested and booked for felony DUI.

According to the Elko Daily Free Press, cops suspected that Rylander was loaded when the candidate was discussing his campaign with the press at the local courthouse.

While talking to the media, police received a call from someone at the courthouse who reported an intoxicated person, according to Lt. Ty Trouten. Two police officers arrived at the county courtyard and stayed in close proximity to Rylander. After Rylander drove away, the police officers did as well. Trouten said Rylander was pulled over for making an improper turn and because the officer knew Rylander did not have a valid license.

Rylander was booked for third-offense DUI, driving with a suspended license, driving without proof of insurance and driving left of the center line. He told the Free Press before his arrest that he considers himself a dark horse candidate due to his "checkered past." Past.
