All fractured c-spines are not the same. I blew mine off in 1997 because it didn't hurt that much more than usual and the increased clumsiness in my hands just came with RA.

It was a stable fracture and the treatment would have been a soft collar, which I wore when I wasn't at work. Oh, and I got myself some buckwheat hull pillows.

I hope there is no problem with his spinal cord or the nerve roots exiting it. Getting to it quickly and starting the anti inflammatories quickly to keep the swelling around the cord to a minimum was the best thing to do.

Remember, you won't know how bad it is for a week at the least. He'll be in traction tonight and possibly in surgery over the weekend.

I've seen the whole range of outcomes, so you'll have to wait and see what he's got.

That happened to my mom a couple of years ago. A quick surgery, to install a screw, and a short rehab had her back to normal. I hope your dad comes out of this okay.
