communication with loved ones like on 9/11? Unless something incapacitated all passengers at once. Weird.

All passengers just fall asleep, and if out long enough, expire.

One of the reports said the plane climbed to 45,000 feet during the flight - that combined with cabin depressurization would do the trick.

The passengers were just a minor inconvenience. There won't be any ransoming or demands. They just wanted the plane.
