Hey...How about some GOOD news!

Remember the heartbreaking story of the little dachshund that was dropped off at a shelter with a note from his elderly owners asking that he be put to sleep because he was sick and they had no money for his care?
Here's an update!

http://www.lifewithdogs.tv/2014/03/senior-dog-left-with-note-to-be-reunited-with-owners/

from the link:

Remember Harley, the senior Dachshund lovingly left at a shelter in a basket with a note from his elderly owners who could no longer afford to care for him? Rescue group Leave No Paws Behind took him in and found his family. The dog, whose real name is Otto, will have expenses for the rest of his life paid for by the rescue, and will be reunited with his family at the end of this month.

Less than a week ago, the 13-year-old Dachshund was left wrapped in a blanket in a basket outside Baldwin Park Animal Shelter in California. Attached to his basket was a heartbreaking letter:

“Our dog is 13½ years old. He is sick starting yesterday with bloody stools, vomiting. Had a skin disease for a few years. We are both seniors, sick with no money. We cannot pay for vet bills, or to put him to sleep. He has never been away from us in all those years. He cannot function without us. Please put him to sleep.”

Instead of honoring the request to have him put to sleep, the shelter contacted Leave No Paws Behind, a non-profit, all-breed, all-foster rescue group that specializes in senior and terminally ill animals. They took the dog in and called him Harley. He was taken to a veterinarian, who determined that not only could he be treated, but that he likely has a couple more years of life left in him.

Because Harley seemed so loved and well-cared for, LNPB wanted to find his owners to see if something could be arranged. Group founder and CEO Toby Wisneski reached out to the public, and his owners came forward after seeing their story on the news.

Doxies are little dogs. And little dogs live longer than big dogs. I have three doxies -- and two of them are now over 18 years old. Sure, my boy is incontinent -- but belly bands take care of that. My girl lost an eye a few months ago and is half blind in the other -- but she gets around just fine.

But, yeah. I cried over that story, too.

The video at the link talks about how hard this economy has been on senior citizens, and so many are unable to afford care for their older pets. But at least for this couple and their dog, help came.

They even got the couple a donation of new tires for their car!
Man, when I read that the elderly lady told her little dog she was so, so sorry, I really lost it!
I'll bet that couple has tears of joy now, I'm sure they do.
This little guy is their baby and he's back home in someone's lap now.

Making me tear up a second time in one day. I felt the same way as you did about how hard it must have been for them. This is one of the reasons that I donate some extra money to a charity fund that my vet keeps to pay for necessary care for pets of people who cannot afford the treatment. Pets should not suffer just because their parents are poor.

I had the vet set up the fund. It never occurred to me until I was at the vet's office, and a man came in with a kitten who had been attacked by a dog. It had puncture holes in its body, and when the vet told him how much it would cost to treat the kitten, the man said he could never afford that and went to leave with that poor kitten. I couldn't watch that, and that was when I realized that there was a need for this. It was something that never occurred to me.
