Greenpeace sues Russia over Arctic 30 detention

Greenpeace is suing Russia before the European Court of Human Rights for detaining its members during a protest last year against Arctic drilling.

The 30 protesters were arrested at gunpoint during a September demonstration against oil drilling by Russian energy giant Gazprom.

The so-called Arctic 30, including Tasmanian man Colin Russell, were charged with hooliganism, which carried a potential seven-year jail term.

They were detained for around two months before being bailed and then freed under a Russian amnesty.
