Chip and Jeff Michaels, brothers from an active Livingston family, are the latest to draw scrutiny. Chip Michaels was identified last month as the Port Authority police officer who provided a tour of the backups to the man who organized the lane closures, another Livingston native, David Wildstein. As for Jeff Michaels, a former chief of staff under Gov. Donald DiFrancesco, he is a lobbyist who has seen a sizable increase in profits since Christies 2009 election, according to public records.
Chip Michaels joined the Port Authority police in 1998 and was considered low-key but a good cop, several sources said. He was among a group of 49 officers promoted in 2006, when he became a sergeant. The Port Authority requires officers to take an exam for promotions.
Chip Michaels was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 a year after Wildstein joined the Port Authority. This time he was one of three officers to advance and was moved to a detail at the George Washington Bridge, where his path would cross Wildsteins in September.
Chips brother Jeff Michaels was also on the rise. He served as a campaign and policy adviser for Christie starting in 2009. The next year, just before Christie took office and Democratic state Sen. Stephen Sweeney of Gloucester County became the Senate president, Jeff started a lobbying firm with Philip Norcross, the brother of the influential South Jersey Democrat George Norcross, who is a close ally of Sweeneys. The firms client list includes Conner Strong & Buckelew, an insurance company whose executive chairman is George Norcross.
