(268,939 posts)Neo-cons want war for profit and for resources - nothing else.
There are many wealthy persons who must have wars to maintain their lifestyles. Please understand their needs. They'd attack Eisenhower - too soft.

(50,949 posts)That's just bonkers, and people are talking about it as if it's an inevitability. Even Rachel is getting a little breathless about the, "And what if Putin invades New Jersey??" prospects. (Of course that is hyperbole on my part, but you get the idea.)

(21,043 posts)A racist nation; libs that are too wimpy, behave weakly, and who whine like babies because Obama is not Houdini the Magician; a country where right wing propaganda is ubiquitous; Republicans in Congress that refuse to budge unless they get to institute their fascist schemes; and a damaged country, damaged over decades by right wing corporate ideas.
Thanks malaise!

(6,335 posts)ormer Defense Secretary Robert Gates pushed back on Sunday against conservatives whove blamed President Obamas weak foreign policy for Russian President Vladimir Putins decision to invade Crimea.
Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Gates dismissed arguments that Obamas handling of the conflict in Syria or his efforts to trim the defense budget emboldened Putin, arguing that the Russian president also invaded Georgia during the George W. Bush administration.
My own view is, after all, Putin invaded Georgia when George W. Bush was president. Nobody ever accused George W. Bush of being weak or unwilling to use military force, Gates, who served as Defense Secretary for Presidents George W. Bush and Obama said. So I think Putin is very opportunistic in these arenas. I think that even if even if we had launched attacks in Syria, even if we werent cutting our defense budget I think Putin saw an opportunity here in Crimea, and he has seized it. Earlier this week, Gates told the Washington Post that the GOP lawmakers should tone down their criticism and try to be supportive of the president rather than natter at the president.
Though most Republicans agree with Obamas policy for handling the Crimean crisis, some conservatives have argued that Obamas perceived weakness on the global stage has given Putin the space to move Russian troops into Crimea. We have a weak and indecisive president and that invites aggression, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said last week. Putin is playing chess and I think were playing marbles, Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee claimed, adding that Russia is running circles around us.

So yes, Thank God Pres O won in 2012 by 51% . . and GOPers still can't believe that they lost.

(18,998 posts)Not by this president or any president you can think of...and no general would be foolish enough to recommend it.
The stakes are way to high, and have been sense the 50s with the cold war and the Mutual Assured Destruction.
But the cold war is back on...and it will consume even more of our budget.

(15,512 posts)There wasn't any war on Cuba either, but the wingnuts tried four times to make it happen. Nuclear war in the Caribbean. The lesson is that we can never take peace for granted and Obama deserves recognition for keeping the dogs at bay these last 6 years.

Can you imagine how long our supply lines would be and how easy it would be to cut them over the thousands of miles they would run a logistical nightmare.
We'd be at such a humongous disadvantage coming from across oceans and continents while the Russian army would just have to cross their own border.
McCain and the Warmongers (sounds like a repug rock band) are out of their fucking minds to even talk about such foolishness.

(15,512 posts)Just planes. And if accuracy isn't important you don't even need planes.

(53,765 posts)and nukes themselves if you're talking about that. I don't think even Putin is willing to go there.
The President has wisely said we're not going there, but if we were troops would still be needed on the ground my original point.
And McCain is still out of his mind advocating sending troops.

(15,512 posts)and would be if Obama didn't once again firmly say no. We've come a long way since the 18th century.
brush
(53,765 posts)but if we want Ukraine still standing (and the USA and Russia for that matter) you still need troops on the ground to hold territory or drive other forces already on the ground out.
I agree, we've come a long way since the 18th century and I'd like to be able to sometime in the near future say that war is "so 20th century, so barbarian, so over", but we haven't come that far from our Iraq debacle, remember?
