"I still can't stand white belly dancers"

The first article got a huge response, here and elsewhere apparently, so the author has responded.

She goes through some of the responses people had to it one by one, if you go to the link.

http://www.salon.com/2014/03/18/i_still_cant_stand_white_belly_dancers/

I’ve written about the Boston bomber; about the U.S. government’s attempts to deport my brother, which kept him in jail for weeks; and about Israel detaining me – a U.S. citizen – and denying me entry in March 2012, but the essay of mine that has sparked the most impassioned responses is one about …

Belly dancing.

The volume of the published response to the essay – a personal opinion piece – was surprising. Guys in the Washington Post and the Atlantic wrote whitesplanations about how cultural mixing is a good thing; other men on racist blogs called me a moron. Daily News Egypt published a response by a non-Egyptian, non-Arab woman. G Willow Wilson wrote in defense of me (and since she’s not an angry woman of color, her argument is being touted as reasonable and sane). Muslimah Media Watch did a roundtable about the piece, and some dancers are saying they need to do better.

White American Culture has taken/stolen much from Arab nations/cultures (and everybody else). So it angers her and sickens her to see White Americans stealing another aspect of her culture and claiming it as their own (i.e. Belly Dancing). This isn't a new complaint - consider the discussions held in earlier times about the role of White Musicians in Jazz.

I'm not saying she's entirely persuasive, though. Just that from her perspective it's understandable.

make TexMex because that makes me a big ol' racist! Also, Chinese(-American) food is racist! We stole some of their cooking styles and ingredients!

See how silly this argument is? She's essentially arguing against race-mixing, which is in itself extremely racist.

At least, that's the most charitable explanation.

I have to say I think this is pretty awesome and I have no problem with it at all:

"Cultural appropriation"? Pfft.

That's not her problem. She's upset that they exist at all.
