http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/03/21/gay-pride-catholic/6699357/NEW YORK (AP) The Catholic League will be allowed to march with an anti-gay-marriage banner in New York City's annual gay-pride parade, organizers said on the heels of a St. Patrick's Day parade prohibition on gay-rights signs and subsequent boycott that drew widespread attention.
Parade organizer David Studinski said Thursday he has no problem with Catholic League President Bill Donohue's plan to participate in the June 29 parade.
"His group's presence affirms the need for this year's pride theme, 'We Have Won When We're One,'" Studinski said in a statement. "Straight is great as long as there's no hate."
Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of the gay-rights group GLAAD, said several straight and Catholic organizations have previously marched alongside LGBT groups, according to Newsday.
I'm sorry but I don't understand this decision. Anyone else ?

(468 posts)I like it.
This is the best possible decision. My guess is that Donohue and his clutch of morons will not actually participate. They were itching for a fight to make the point that "teh gheys are teh intolerenzzz!!!1!" This was just a troll job by Donohue. Game over.

(468 posts)Today, I informed Heritage of Pride officials that I objected to their rule requiring me to attend gay training sessions, or what they call information sessions, Donohue was quoted as saying on Friday. I dont agree with your rule, I said. They responded by saying that attendance was mandatory.
Seriously.

(63,645 posts)If Bill Donohue had been barred from participating in the gay-pride parade, then he would use it to justify the exclusion of LGBT people from the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Allowing Donohue to partiipate in the parade only reinforces the argument that we are tolerant while he is not.

(26,273 posts)....... to be the best way to show how tolerant we are.
And I don't think I like the logic that denying human rights to me and my partner is the "other side" of the argument. I feel it is a "both sides have a point" trap the media falls in to.
That said, let the fuckers march. They won't make it one block. They'll get their martyrdom they are after - I don't give a fuck if they think the mean old gays are intolerant to bigots.
In the big scheme of things it won't mean shit and I'll get to watch them suffer.

(14,337 posts)They are probably going to get a LOT on Bronx Cheers! He is so STUPID that he doesn't realize this. Be careful what you wish for, Donohue, you just might get it!
As the STRAIGHT Mom of a married lesbian daughter, and FORMER Catholic, I certainly don't support him, on more than one front. He would get my Bronx cheer if I was there.

(14,498 posts)LGBT-loathing Catholics ( or any other demographic) do NOT have a "right" to march in the LGBT parade... the explicit purpose of which is to affirm LGBT rights and equality.
It is NOT equivalent or analogous to Irish LGBT's wishing to celebrate Paddy's Day... the purpose of which is to affirm all things Irish.
As I said the other day in a related thread:
>>>The LGBT marchers at the St Patrick's Parade are pro-Irish. They are mostly Irish and many are Irish born. They support, and do not oppose , the central theme of the parade: celebrating the great things about Irish history, culture and people.
There are ALREADY straight people allowed in the LGBT parade. They are ENCOURAGED to identify themselves as such. Some of them are organized into groups. They are all there to support the central theme of the parade: celebrating the great things about lgbt history, culture and people. >>>
So....when are people going to start listening to me?
This current sidestep by the Pride organizers sounds clever but there could be unintended consequences. (Violence, for one.)

(22,271 posts)I absolutely understand their decision. Sort of like the ACLU defending the KKK and their right to march. The idea is that, you may not like what they have to say but you'll defend to the death their right to say it.
Further, it's always good to see the bigots just sort of putting it out there -- like the Catholics needed even MORE bad publicity, publicity that is, once again, of their own making.
