Swedes catch 40cm 'rat from hell' in their kitchenA family in Solna, north of Stockholm, had no idea what was in store when their pet cat was too scared to go into the kitchen.
"We thought it could be a little mouse, but after a while we figured it couldn't be because it was making too much noise," Signe Bengtsson told The Local.
Pest controllers who were called in to catch the beast found it measured 40 centimetres - not including the tail.
A family in Solna, north of Stockholm, had no idea what was in store when their pet cat was too scared to go into the kitchen.
"We thought it could be a little mouse, but after a while we figured it couldn't be because it was making too much noise," Signe Bengtsson told The Local.
Her worst fears were confirmed while emptying the trash a few days later when she saw a rat guzzling leftovers under the sink.
"It was right there in our rubbish bin, a mighty monster. I was petrified. I couldn't believe such a big rat could exist," she said.
"I couldn't help but do the old classic and jump on the kitchen table and scream."
It turned out that the rat had found its way into the apartment cellars by chewing through cement and wood, the pest controllers explained.
"It was quite a shocking experience," Bengtsson said in summary. "No one wanted to go into the kitchen after, and the cat was terrified for a week. The pest controllers said they'd never seen such a big rat before."
Look at the size of that trap!...40cm is 15.75"

(13,091 posts)I am terrified of mice; dead or alive.
Seeing a rat that large would have sent me over the edge.

It looks like a supersized regular rat, not some new species. So I was prompted to google:

They say the Norway rat is large, growing up to 18 inches, but that includes the tail. This must be Rattus Norvegicus, subspecies Giganticus.
If I saw one of those things swimming in a lake with me, I'd be out of the water so fast I'd leave a trail of fire!

(86,562 posts)I can imagine the racket there must have been when that trap sprang... eeek.
I had a local packrat find it's way into my cabin when I first got here, I thought it was a squirrel - they are about the same size and have bushy tails but only seem active at night. I threw something at it and it left, patched up the hole n the chinking next day. The only large rats I've ever heard of are the sewer rats of NYC.
I love wild animals but those, I would have some issues with them, all the same I don't like to see dead anythings.
