They rattled of at lease six prior ones on NPR last evening, ranging from 1949, to (I think) 2006.

not like it happened in distant pre-history.

now who said it was safe, who said unsafe, how far who thought it would slide when it did again, etc etc etc. It will take a bit for it to all come together as far as that goes but yes, it has, they knew it would again but as far as how far?

by local authorities everywhere to disallow homes from being built near slide prone areas. Certain areas of California comes to mind. These geologic areas are very dangerous because it's obvious there is no underlying rock foundation. It's just a mountain or hillside of dirt and very little rock.

They knew this would slide again, just differed as far as I can tell, in how much and how far and I think the mass of it took them all by surprise.
