Florida Department of Children and Families officials called police after working with the mother, Yolander Lasane, for about a month.
Photos investigators took at the home show doors covered in bugs, rooms filled with trash and food thrown throughout the home.
Investigators said dog feces was spread throughout the home and that beds were covered in urine.
Horrible.

According to the report, Lasane told police it was her weight and knees that kept her from caring for her children. She said "she can only lay in bed," leaving the kids to "come and go as they please."
Maybe if you didn't lay in bed all day you would lose some weight and exercise your knees lady-

(22,845 posts)The woman could be severely depressed or have other psychiatric problems that are keeping her from functioning. For instance, she might have a severe case of postpartum depression that's never gone away. She might not have any family or friends who could help her out. Coping with five kids can be overwhelming for people who have health or psychiatric issues.
She may also have chronic fatigue syndrome, which I assure you is real. It is horrible.
I've been through a serious depression and I can understand feeling unable to get up or do anything. And most anti-depressants cause major weight gain.

(30,884 posts)The mother largely immobile and morbidly obese because of a combination of physical and then undiagnosed psychiatric conditions, the kids fending for themselves, the house a disaster of epic proportions with rotting food and animal feces everywhere. I was the friend of one of her kids. I came from a much larger family with its share of problems but this house was startling in the dysfunction. They stayed under the radar of social services because the kids all went to school every day dressed in clean clothes.
This woman needs help and her children need care.

I applied when I first graduated from college. I had a degree in Justice Studies and 3 internships, dealing with children/teenagers, under my belt. I wasn't hired because there wasn't any more money in the budget...or so they say.

(37,457 posts)Also...and this is old information, might have changed...there was a real bias towards "not interfering in family life" with DCF. Things had to be really horrendous for children to be removed or a similar step. I'd say this was pretty horrendous but of course I don't know all the facts. Florida has a lot of people who absolutely despise DCF, so there are political ramifications at work.

(6,795 posts)I would have had no problem interfering in family life if I thought a child's life was in danger.
AZ is pretty conservative as well. What to do?
