(21,786 posts)ahead in others; the Civil Partnership Act of 2004 gave same-sex couples the right to form legally recognised civil partnerships with the same legal status as civil marriage (and with same-sex partners of UK citizens entitled to emigrate under the same rules as married spouses), which the US didn't catch up to until just last year when DOMA was ruled unconstitutional.
