The Road To Tucson's César E. Chávez Holiday
Posted by David Safier on Thu, Mar 6, 2014 at 11:00 AM
The mood was more celebratory than tense Tuesday when the city council voted 7-0 to create a César Chávez holiday. It was pretty much a done deal. But that doesn't mean it was easy.
I talked with Cam Juarez, chair of the Arizona César E. Chávez Holiday Coalition since 2013, to get the back story, the work behind the Tuesday vote. He filled in some of the details.
Tucson is actually late to the table in creating César E. Chávez Day. Pima County voted for the holiday in October, 2001. The cities of Phoenix and Tempe, not exactly bastions of liberalism, celebrate the holiday. So does South Tucson. And California's official César Chávez holiday is twenty years old. That puts a bit of perspective on people's concern over the money the holiday will cost Tucson. True, it will cost an estimated $500,000, but this isn't "the People's Republic of Tucson" going it alone, making some expensive, radical statement. Tuesday's vote is really about the city playing catch-up, doing what it should have done long ago.
The Arizona César E. Chávez Holiday Coalition has been around since 2001, when it formed to help create the Pima County holiday. It has continued to work in an organizing and educational capacity, sponsoring the annual Chávez march and the Cesar E. Chavez Youth Leadership Conference.

(14,449 posts)I don't get why people think 10 federal holidays are enough. In Italy, they must have around 20 at least. Between President's Day and Memorial Day, too much time between a day off. I always thought Good Friday would be a great day off....HOWEVER, I know it would be too controversial, but I just want the day off and has nothing to do with Religion...lol.

(6,719 posts)Hope you get a crack at it soon. Really good. No Hollywood glitz. Very straight forward. Some news clips inserted. Does not glorify Chavez which my friend was worried about before we went to the film. Seems honest and real. All the people involved really struggled. Both of us were pleased to have seen it, and as we were leaving we were reading a poster. A man walking past us said, just saw it you you have to go see it. We said we had just seen it also and were glad. Turned out the man was a movie critic and he was planning a positive write up of the film.

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Hundreds of Tucson residents showed up to watch a private screening of the movie "César Chavez: An American Hero" at the Harkins Cinema off Irvington road, on Friday.
The Arizona César Chavez holiday coalition rented out a private theater and organizer Ruben Reyes said, he was pleasantly surprised to see all 390 seats sell out in less than ten days.
The coalition sold tickets for $15 a piece to raise money for their organization.
In addition to the movie night, this weekend the coalition was organizing the 14th annual César E. Chavez march and rally. The community planned to gather at Pueblo High School located at 3500 S. 12th Avenue and march to Rudy Garcia Park on S. Nogales Highway. Speakers, musicians, and vendors would be at the park to greet the marchers.

(28,452 posts)Wish it would be adopted everywhere, but you know, east of the Mississippi and south of the Mason-Dixon line barely acknowledge Mexican-Americans exist, much less that they've contributed to US labor history.

Robert Kennedy and Cesar Chavez in 1968
Below are some pictures of Robert F. Kennedy with Cesar Chavez after Chavez's hunger strike. We have not seen a politician so in solidarity with proletarian workers since RFK. The poor are often of no concern in today's political debate. It is so moving to see these two heroes of social justice together.

I had heard the Tom Paxton song about "All they will call you will be Deportee" but did not know until recently that that song was based on an actual plane crash of deportees.
Just last year they got a proper marker for the mass grave.
