Just out of curiousity...

Are we even human to you people ?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024763372

If you goddamn NTs(Neurotypicals, essentially anybody who does not have mental illness or a neurological disorder), as a group, actually meant half the shit you said than maybe so many people with mental health issues wouldn't be homeless. Maybe so many of us wouldn't be institutionalized. But than I guess we're just an annoyance, right ? It happens all the time. Mentally Ill person has problems adjusting so they go to jail and die of neglect, or lose their job and begin a downward spiral into their own personal hell, or just get beat to death by the cops. Because, you know, their crazy why should they be treated like people.

We're treated like shit, blamed and shamed for things we can't help, and than the moment we actually demand to be treated with some basic decency we're told to pipe down since things aren't as bad as they used to be. That's of course if you don't just accuse us of being delusional. I don't deny there are a lot of us with some serious issues but we're often either born that way, develop them too early in life for us to even aware of it until later on, or they come about as a result of traumatic events. Than we live them and do the best we can to adjust to a society that is pretty much unable to empathize with what we go through. Now that's just the adults.

In this country there are countless quacks, fakes, and frauds, who peddle their "alternative medicine" to desperate parents hoping to "cure" their offspring of whatever afflicts them. Because ya know, their childrens' diagnosis is just the result of Big Pharma wanting to make their kids into little drug addicts. It doesn't matter that a number of children die each year from this crap and who knows how many of those who don't just end becoming even more "maladjusted" than they would have been because their parents just couldn't live with the "embarrassment" of having a child that wasn't normal.

Why am I so angry over this you might ask ? Because I've known too many people who ended up forgotten and discarded by society because they couldn't "deal with it" well enough. Most of the time it was people who either couldn't afford to get insurance for the treatment they needed or were denied coverage all together despite being able to afford it. Because of this the medical help that would have stabilized them enough to hold down a job and live a semi-normal life was out of their reach. But a portion of them were the children of parents who just treated them like a burden and ended up never getting them any help of any sort. Last I heard a lot of these people I've known were either in Jail, Homeless, or if their lucky on welfare. I'm sure there are those here like me with Mental Health issues that aren't that severe and have been able to adjust and deal with their problems well enough to function in society and perhaps to them I might be making mountains out of molehills. BUT GODDAMN IT ALL!!!! When will this stop! When will you NTs start getting it through your thick, ignorant, apathetic skulls that just ignoring us or sticking us in cells too doped up to think is not going to solve anything. THAT WE ARE HUMAN! That we want to live our lives in relative peace and stability. That we're actually no more intentionally violent than any of you.

I suppose me getting angry at you isn't going to help much either. But this happens so much and despite how much even I may want to ignore it at times I just can't. Governmental bodies make laws about us, schools and employers make policies about us, countless morons make completely and totally ignorant statements about us. All of this happens and more often not than it's by people who actually understand very little about how life in society is for us. A good example of what I'm talking about can be seen in the License laws in my own State of Iowa. If I'm stopped by a police officer for simply speeding, just normal every day speeding that millions of you get tickets for each year. Than for whatever reason if I admit to a police officer that I'm Autistic, maybe because when I get nervous my ability to act normal goes out the window and he starts asking why I can't keep eye contact with him, if he's ignorant or maybe just wants to be a dick he can use my Autism as a reason to put my eligibility to even have a driver's license up for review. It doesn't matter that there is no evidence that High-Functioning Autistics as a whole are any worse behind the wheel than NTs. It doesn't matter what driving my record is like. It doesn't even matter that I'm on the very High-Functioning end of the spectrum. Just that I have Autism is enough by it's self.

Friggin' hell, I'm so angry right now I'm shaking. You people can do all sorts of things that affect us in negatives ways and hell we can't even get angry about it. Because if we do all you people see is a bunch of crazies reacting to delusions in our heads regardless of how actually justified our anger is. If nothing else maybe this rant will make the uninformed among you think twice about how you view us.
Though I doubt much will change in your minds since others far more eloquent and convincing than me have tried and failed.

Over the last 40 years the GOP has been a magnet for the people with no empathy. They are an empty lot when it comes to compassion and tolerance. Eddie Munster (sometimes also known as paul ryan) shows you exactly how much his Church going butt cares in his new budget... el zilcho. Yet people still vote for him.

But it was that actor from 1950 B movies that dismantled our mental health facilities and created 99% of our homeless population. And people of his mind type have continued to cut programs and services for the poor, homeless and disabled (mental or physical).

It is sad, truly sad.

However I do take hope with me and try to spread it around. Just remember this to shall pass. And soon the gop will die as most of its members are very old white people and will very soon have to answer to their maker for all crap the they pulled.

But if you want change make sure you VOTE! Make sure everyone you know votes!

so frankly you spewing your venom at me is really a waste of time. Most of my experience on DU has also been favorable when it comes to mental health issues. So I'm sitting here wondering exactly who the "YOU PEOPLE" are who are so thick skulled, ignorant, and apathetic?

I understand your frustration and your post, I just don't see the massive group of "you people" here on DU.

On DU as whole you are correct, but I'm not talking about just DU I'm talking about society as a whole. I don't deny my painting with a broad brush there. SomethingFishy I don't know what experience is but I've seen it happen to so many people who could've otherwise been stable, law-abiding, productive, members of society. Also it's often what is not seen that in my experience that often ends up hurting people who live with Mental Health issues. This is a subject I'm extremely passionate about and I don't deny this passion can at times override my logic. It's just there has been so many events like these as of late that this one just kind of set me off. Honestly I think we like to focus so much on the things that have improved that we end not seeing or forgetting the things that haven't.
I hope things go well for your son.
