1. $11.00 ???????

The "REAL" minimum wage SHOULD be about $22.00 and hour. $11.00 is just a barely living wage. $11.00, you still need government assistance. How is taking assistance a livable wage? Oh, and this $11.00 isn't happening for another 3 fucking years. We are getting screwed big time. And I mean none of this anger toward the poster. It's just unbelievable in the 21st Century we're still working for $8.00 an hour.

Just another 3 years, and we accept it. 7 years ago, I was lucky to have a good job that paid $15.00 with good insurance, and profit sharing. But by the time you figure taxes on that $15.00 it comes out to $10.00 take home. $400.00 a week not counting the gas it takes to get to work, insurance, food, rent, bills all with $400.00 a week. How is that livable? In 1989 I started a job, and $8.00 was starting pay. That was 25 years ago. A quarter of a century, and we're supposed to be happy with $11.00 in 3 MORE years.

5. At minimum wage as a 20 year old in 1981, I could at least afford a one bedroom apartment, car
Tue Apr 1, 2014, 09:59 PM

payment, phone, cable tv and a little to blow on the weekends at 40 hours. The car and apartment were by no means very nice. I lived in a pretty reasonable area in Idaho then. I guess I had also gotten a few small raises but was still just above minimum anyway.

I can't imagine anyone being able to even do that now.

Do they even give kids jobs like they used to? I don't see boxboys like I used to at grocery stores. That was my first job. A couple of stores where I live seem to like to use adult somewhat handicapped people for those jobs. Not that I don't like seeing them getting to work but it kind of makes me wonder? Are they really kind of exploiting those people while patting themselves on the back for giving them jobs?

A kid in the 70's would go to work at the same store and expect to move up to a full time job if he stuck it out. A couple of guys I worked with did just that. I got pissed off once and went to work for the competition. I'd bet they don't run into that kind of thing much with the people they have bagging grocerys now.

Employing adults with disabilities isn't exploitation. ..ridiculous. .

I employ around 30 high school and Jr college age. Some are stellar employees. ..even the best need more time off and are less committed than a responsible adult employee, the worst are maddening. Turn over is much higher. I measure production. I maintain a very diverse (in every way) staff. Some of the most productive employees I have are past retirement age or have disabilities.

14. Where they lost me was the begining of summer before my senior year in high school.

I had worked there for a year and a half and worked my way up to the prime after school shift. Early afternoon to early evening. I didn't have to stay until closing. After a few guys quit, they needed someone experienced to close and stuck me on it. They did not share that privelege with the other senior boxboy who had seniority on me because he started one day sooner! I complained but was basically told to go f#ck myself, I suspected partly because his older brother was one of the experienced stock clerks.

I think it was just two days later their turnover got worse! I was gone! Going in to pick up my last check one woman I didn't like much told me the manager wanted to kill me! That was gratifying to say the least! LOL Then the other guy who dodged closing during the summer got stuck with it anyway!

6. I am a believer in a living wage for low skill/entry level

Jobs. I object to a system which doesn't scale off cost of living in the area. .at least at the state level. This is not to say I believe states should have control, just that a business on the plains of Kansas shouldn't have to pay a LA or NYC living wage.
