W.Va. has massive turnout for Medicaid enrollment

W.Va. has massive turnout for Medicaid enrollment

State sees nearly double federal projections

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — On the final day to begin enrolling for health insurance under the new federal health care mandate, West Virginia has nearly doubled the projected number of individuals to sign up under the state’s Medicaid expansion.

The total federal projection since January 2014 in West Virginia was 63,000, said Jeremiah Samples, Department of Health and Human Resources assistant to the secretary. By Friday, 104,820 people had signed up, he said.

<...>

Samples said the reason West Virginia nearly doubled the projected number of enrollment was by identifying potential participants using information on existing food stamps and Medicaid applications. Only one of four states with this kind of auto enrollment, the process garnered around 118,000 enrollees, he said.

<...>

In addition to the expansion of Medicaid, subsidized private insurance plans are available in the Health Insurance Marketplace. The Offices of the Insurance Commissioner estimates the Affordable Care Act will be reduced from 246,000 to 76,000 by 2016.

This will be a part of the 47% of takers. Hopefully the sign up will continue.

Complaining about the ACA, and saying of "course those people signing up are doing it because they are getting a subsidy, something for nothing", as though though it is Wong for all people to get healthcare.

What is wrong with these people, how immoral can one be to actually want to deny healthcare to the poor?

As far as I as concerned the Democrats should be campaigning on this big time in 2014

that those who just got health insurance are going to point out they are glad to get healthcare amnd will also point out they could not get any real healthcare otherwise. The population of West Virginia and in another success story Kentucky is not high and most people know someone who will benefit. So many in these states have weathered the boom and bust economies of the coal industry watching inevitably more poor sick and injured be created. Many had family member die from Black Lung and remember the god send it was to widows when the Federal Government passed the black lung program. I suspect many many mpore Democrats to return to the fold. It is very likely that West Virginia and Kentucky will elect a slew of Democrats to the House of representatives.
Like they say time to Barack Enroll.
By the way there are many many more who are going to be grandfathered into both Obamacare and Medicaid expansion. So lets expect numbers to keep climbing. The question is why is not everyone covered??

As to whether one should campaign on this, we say in Kentucky if you have a good horse ride it!

There are a lot of important races for the state legislature but the biggest race is for the U.S. Senate, to fill the seat being vacated by Jay Rockefeller. Natalie Tennant vs. Shelley Moore Capito. Tennant needs all the help she can get -- Capito has quite a war chest.
